I just recently got into mastering. So im maybe not the best to answer this.
I use izoptope ozone 5, very handy to have all steps after each other.
I can recommend it!.           .

mate... i would just focus on a good as u can possably get it mix.. and leave it.

genral quick mastering for demos etc fair enuff...

id leave it tho and mix with mastering in mind,,,

u already have the arse ache frustration of spending time balancing a mix... let someone take more of the strain when it comes to the final part ...

because there is no setting ,just hours of tyring to get it sounding great on a excelent pair of monitors and treatment.

as for plugins tho..for quick general mastering for idea demos...
i would say waves ssl api neve, psp and M/s treatments...

there certainty isnt a 'setting'

10-20years of experience would be a good preset setting to start.

It depends what plugins I use and how I use them on the track! Generally I opt for more than one compressor with light compression, a little stereo imaging (also very light and sometimes the track won't even need it) and equing. Less is more.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

ok listen dudes. mastering is not about special tecnichs. or presets or settings or use of a chain that always to a quite job. mastering requiers "golden Ears" and good founded knowledge in music production. so you hear a track and youknow whats to do.

there are kind of tracks usually you can do a lot. that menas shape the whole bass structure with eq and stuff and most the times the musician like the result. but for mastering tracks wich come pretty mixed. there are some basics to do as far as im into it.

COMPRESSOR

EQ

LOUDNESS MAXIMIZER/LIMITER

compression: more as a overall dynamic process that works with attack and release especially on kick and openhat. every track has a setting that fits. depends on speed and genre. ratio is usually set low at somewhere 2-3 release depends almost just on the speed of the track. note that one 16th on 145 bpm is 106 msec i believe? make sure that the track is still on same loudness after compression.

eq: the balance of the mix. that is meant in mastering to make the good mix as equal as possible. that is why mastering is made in a diffrent studio with almost perfect acoustiscs. sometimes eq is better after comp sometimes better before.

finalstep limiting. bring the track to volume.

this are my mastering basics. i dont want to tell any shit but thats how it works for me and some guys i know also work with. also i learned that almost every engineer has its own technique

there are much fx you can add like bandmachine. saturator stereo imaging or mastering reverb. just go and find out for yourself.

think mastering should not pump the sound again to the next level just give it the little shine it needs

My default chain:

GlissEQ for low-cut and general EQ (in most cases, i don't EQ a lot at mastering stage)
URS comp for general compression
steinberg stereoexpander
URS BLT EQ for some sweet high and low end boosts if needed
Crysonic Spectraphy for limiting
