I got inspired for this topic by a comment Spindrift made in the names, names thread:

Quote:

Nowadays it's many DJ's who is used to travel around and play short set's, and of course you don't have much time to build a journey in 3hrs.
And of course it becomes a competition who can blast the most, so you get ppl playing really hard music in the beginning of the party, when the energy is not built up yet.

It is very common, that DJs nowadays play only a couple of hours. Many arrive at the party only short time before they start to play and leave soon after they finished their set.

When I first started going to parties, that was different. You had maybe three DJs doing the whole party. They were there from beginning to end and when they weren´t playing you saw them on the dancefloor.

I understand, that from a business perspective it makes more sense to have many different attractive names on your line up, so my question is more to the people on the dancefloor:
What do you prefere, many DJs playing two hours sets, or, let´s say three DJs sharing the time between them?

I am curious about your opinions.

Ganja - not necessarily....I have been to outdoor parties where the Dj who played a long set did not have the crowd or understand the vibe at all, so after 5 hours, no-one danced...

On the flip side, I have been to a squat party in London where Dimitri played for 4 1/2 hours and no-one seemed to know he had finished as the mix in to the next was seamless and he had kept everyone so tranced out it was amaaazing....I say pick your DJ's carefully, cos these days with the short sets, not many have any idea about musical progression....

you are right is depend on the dj of course but i love a long dj set were the dj can expand his trip than short dj sets who come quick do a quick job and that's it if you know what i mean...A good Dj plays long sets in my opinion what do you think?

ur rite ganja gil .,, a good dj knows how to weave his tory perfectly .,, eg raja rams stash bad vol1.,, brilliant set.,, moreover three four djs r way too many for a fourteeen hours party.,, it should be two for a 10 hr gig .,, four or five fr a three day .,,

othrwise i'm not averse to a mixed psychedelik cuisine.,,           missing plug-in

three to four good djs spinning out six to eight hour sets for a 24 hour party would be just right.

Ha, I wish. Here I have to fight for my 1 and a half hour minimum. I'd love to play 3hrs+ but with so few parties and so many attention-loving DJs the competition is ridiculous... I think people around here miss the 'set as a journey' concept entirely... the few parties I've gone to this year all featured short sets with DJs just hammering the full-on... people tend to like it though, so who am I to complain. I'll just stay home

hello pointy

in my personal opinion, i prefer listen to few Dj's and long sets, because i see one set as a trip, and the Dj as the Captain , so if we have too many captains comanding the ship, he will be constantly changing his course!!!..hope you get my point...

I think I got your point, Psilocibino
Nice metaphor with the ship and the captains. Same with too many cooks for one meal.

The best parties, the best trance-dance experiences I definetly had, when there was only one or a few DJs. The energy is flowing much better and taking you on a real psychedelic journey. Imo this element get's very much lost these days, where one after another DJ is blasting his/her most powerful tracks.
I imagine it must be quite stressful for the DJs as well.

"People don't know how to throw proper parties anymore", true, but maybe we should remind them how to do it (well, at least that was one reason I opened this thread).

Exactly! A few months ago i even saw astrix playing in paris for 20 minuts...(so fucking ridiculous)
Even one hour live act does not make any sense. If this goes like this we will be paying for a 1:30h of live like rock concerts...
I dig jorg and goa gil that play until they have the ppl and then they take them whre ppl want to go.
That the basic idea of a dj, no?

i think 2h set is the MINIMUM a Dj should play!...In a party with 3/4 top Dj's, i think 3/4 hours each one is the perfect time so they can show their work!

give Dj's a chance.....give them time!!
