Step right up for another installment in the Timo chapter of psychedelic dance music. "Chapora Nightlife" is the follow up from Mandalavandalz debut album "Hongkongknightlife" & second album "Kamakaze". Always nice to hear some new music from this freakish pioneer, so let's see how it goes...

1. Gods ov Goa
No fucking around.. we're straight into the action. A slidey bassline underneath zappy synths keeps things moving for the first 2 & a half minutes, before a change in the bassline heralds the entry of a new oscillating synth sound, which disappears by the 3 & a half minute mark, although it seems to return a little in the background. It's quite strange, it almost sounds like a voice. Some nice little melodies wrap the song up.

2. Chandrakant
Very bassy start to this one - don't tell me Timo's been taking lessons in killah?!? Wow, this is a real surprise - this is totally rocking!!! Not that Timo hasn't always rocked, but this is a surefire dancefloor .-=smasher=-. Slight lift in the bassline about 2 & a half minutes through & we've got a bit more synth action over the top, with some Indian singing around 3 & a half minutes.. Timo has certainly been soaking up the Goan vibez!! Like the drive in the bassline in this track. The synths really start to take off about 5 & a half minutes through & we finish we more vocals.

3. One n Only Sperminator
Wow!!! Timo really HAS been taking lessons in killah!!! Another phat bassline gets the grooving started. Hmmm this is a really nice track.. by the 2 minute mark I've been totally sucked in & that's when things start getting weirder. Quite a dark number I must say - lotsa squelchy synth bits & some heavy basslines that seem to be constantly morphing. This track never really seems to take off though. It's quite deep & trancey, but I kept waiting for some sorta peak that never really came.

4. Roller Gauze
Ah, this is more classic Timo style, but with a new twist - these zappy little synth lines that I'd usually associate with an almost Digital Psionics style sound. The bassline rolls along underneath as more synth riffs sting your mind. After about 2 & a half minutes we get a bit more of a melodic sound appearing. Ah excellent, this one really starts going off with the melodies. The last couple of minutes are quite rocking.

5. Horny Goa Teen Pimps
What a great song title!!! We have a bassline!! This is quite a stomper of a track.. I've gotta say I'm surprised by the style of this album - it's been quite banging so far. Some crazy melodies in this one. Wow I'm really liking this... it just pounds away & sucks you into it more & more. One of the synth sounds has some sort of strange dischordance to it, but it all fits together as a whole so nicely. This is my favourite on the CD so far. Yes, I really like this one. The bassline just keeps on going & going then it lifts a notch as the whole track does & I'm flying in my mind. Fucking nice one Timo!

6. Chapora Nightlife
The title track to the album. Does this mean it will be the best? Hmmm, not so far. Pretty groovy bassline, lotsa zappy synths, a bit of chanting & some nice percussion. 2 minutes in a synth sound enters that I think is very classic for this style. Yes, this is more of what we've received in the past from this artist, quite crazy, but at the same time somewhat delicate with the grooves that it creates. Develops into a deeper more full on sound the further through the track though with quite a chuggin dug dugga bassline, but still with the traditional Timo melodies.

7. Mata's Medical Story
Well this starts off in quite a groovy fashion with a pretty funny sample.. bassline that steps up & down again. Pretty short track, some nice changes in bassline that are subtle yet effective. Excellent synth work, very nice melodies. Not top notch production but the musicality certainly makes up for that.

8. Kichiguy
Well this one starts off very interesting & pounding. I haven't heard this type of track from this artist before & this has me hangin on the edge of my seat with my dancing shoes on, waiting for the hooks to come. The bassline is damn solid & the percussion is quite ominous & slammin. Wow!! What can I say? NIGHT-TIME STORMER!!! This is some heavy, heavy shit! I'm very impressed. It's deep & dark & the synths just sorta sit in the background growling away & occupying your mind while the bassline & percussion insists that you stomp along. This one is great.. my favourite so far.

9. Do U Read Me (Shakin' Spun-Sweaters)
Nice bass patch for this track. Very warm & round or something. CRAZY synth work. This track is quite full on - the bassline goes crazy! There's this synth that has a really nice harmonic aspect to it & one that sounds like a spring or something. Some very interesting sound synthesis going on all-round in this track. Quite interesting track & very crazy.

10. Monkeywalium
A big phat bassline great me. It has a nice groove to it.. some swing or something maybe? A nice synth in the background sounds kinda like a voice. Nice changes in bassline at appropriate times. This is quite a groovy track as well. Really like the basslines. Can't say too much about the top end - not a lot to grab onto. Some nice melodies here & there, a nice little arp going in the background, but the really meaty bits seem to come & go quite quickly.

11. Typ10L4
Another groover. Love the classical touch halfway through. Not really too much to say about this track really. It just kinda cruises along. Plenty of synth work on either side of the classical section. No real major changes to speak of, although there is significant variation in the bassline towards the end.

12. Bombaybooster
Ahah, we have ze goa track now. Nice percussion I must say. Hehehe... truly this is Goa trance. Wicked. Melodic madness. Epic stuff with this nice little voice going "ohhhhh" in the background. hehe.. makes me want to go to Goa, or at least see Timo play again somewhere sometime soon. Kudos for keeping the vibe alive, albeit in a somewhat stranger fashion, although this is not so weird really - it really is all Goa to me

13. Raggare
So do we have a "token chill track"? Haha, nope! Another groover of a bassline! A trumpet! I hear a trumpet! This track seems quite organic. Some strange, almost imperceptibal changes going on. Some funky guitars very briefly. This track seems somewhat dischordant, but it all seems to keep together somehow, despite the amount of melody going on. The trumpet sounds in a nice way to signal the end of the album.

Hmmm... what to say? On the whole it's a nice CD. Pretty much what I've come to expect, although it was a bit more 'killah' than I was expecting, which was nice to be honest. The production levels have improved from the last album. That may be because of better mastering or better studio techniques. Given that the thank you list includes Kindzadza, Spindrift & Trashlords I'd say he's being influenced by & has been taking some tips from these guys as he was writing this stuff in Goa. Anywho, nothing particularly groundbreaking or new here from a global perspective, although the sound of this artist has obviously progressed from the last album. A welcome mix between the classic Funland sound & the more 'powerful' scandisounds. Not sure whether to give it 8.5 or 9 outta 10... I think I'll go with 9.           new Hadal Drop album on the way

Oof... really can't wait to get this one! Kamakaze was an AMAZING album... one of the (if not the) best suomisaundi can offer... I was blown away... hope the new one will have at least a fraction of that effect and I'll be happy           How am I supposed to hallucinate with all these swirling colors distracting me!

i really like #4 Roller Gauze the best so far. very aptly named track IMO,
also #11 Typ10L4-like the strings and stuff and the bass is really phat. slow groover.
and #5 the teen pimps track i dig a lot(-the porn samples...just a bit gross 4 me), but the bass is so bomber!!!

very nice overall tho, i like to think of this as nu skool goa

Mandalavandalz - Chapora Nightlife

6D Soundz 2004

01 - Gods Of Goa
02 - Chandrakant
03 - One N Only Sperminator
04 - Roller Gauze
05 - Horny Goa Teen Pimps
06 - Chapora Nightlife
07 - Mata's Medical Story
08 - Kichiguy
09 - Do U Read Me (Shakin' Spun-Sweaters)
10 - Monkeywalium
11 - T4P10L4
12 - Bombaybooster
13 - Raggare

While I must admit I am generally lacking when it comes to knowledge of the whole sub-genre of psy generally known as "Finnish", I must say I found Mandalavandalz - Chapora Nightlife, on Japan's 6D Soundz, to be an excellent piece of music from front to back.

While many of the tracks are rather short, there is little fuss involved here, only slamming tracks from front to back. Laced with a heavy dose of old school psy-sounds, this albums true strong point is its bass. Fans of today's full on 16th note bass action should pay attention because here is some serious bass action that is not only low, but has some serious freakin' GROOVE happening (anyone else ere remember groove?). Couple that with a serious dose of purely crazy noise, some ethnic fun and a dase of plain old fun humor and you have a winner of a cd.

While the whole abum is most excellent, for me, the second track, Chandrakant, sums up everything right and true about this disc. Starting off with little fuss (i.e. no long intros, although I do normally like big intros) this track features some monsterously funky bass grooves that grab you and refuse to let go. Add to it some nice ethnic percussion work, a mess of fly by noises and some good vocal sample work that is both ethnic and a hair tongue in cheek and you have a wonderful sonic battlezone (although most definately not of the typical full on variety). Chandrakant alone makes this CD worth the price of admission, but the rest of the CD is just as good, making this one of my best little discoveries of the year.

The end result - Definately a recommended work, especially for people who prefer groove over an endless 16th note bass assault. 8.5/10           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity
