been discussing this topic on a hardhouse forum as to why there arent more live acts in that scene compared to say the psytrance scene that seems to have atleast 2-3 live acts and afew djs per event .

basically a well known hardhouse dj told me that people that go clubbing couldnt really care less if there was a live act playing and that also the better known producer/djs prefer to just go and stick on a vinyl/cd and play out instead of lugging around equipment ..has a point but it still leaves me asking why does it happen more often in the psy scene then ...surely the same could be said for psy producers that they could also just wack on a cd and play out instead of lugging around a PA half way around the world.

any thoughts ?

Live Act = Novelty

In psy trance its a commercial selling point to have a LIVE ACT....

when you see that on the flyer its like WOW MAN ...so and so is playing live/...

also psykops are a bunch of stoners and liaak to have a live act where the guy os actually turning some knobs is like REALLY REALLY coooooool.

Anyways.... live acts are nothing more than cueing a few track and fiddling with a controller or whatever the fuck.

Quite frankly the average fan doesnt know what the fuck is going on, on the stage,...and they see the laptop and they go wow, and they get wet and moist...balh blah blah....

I think LIVE is overrated and alot of guys are there, ....spinnning it for all they are worth money wise...correct me if i am wrong, but if you are an artist , you can charge more for a live act.......

yes i am cynnical but i have reason to be...

i have watched too many guys do nothing really on stage , wave their arms in the air and call it live

heard too many stories about big acts whose keyboards werent even plugged in (astral projection and infected mushroom)

anyways if the punters (as they say) dig it , then let it be...

WITH Exception to... Colin and OOOD with their live act, which is really live. So ya

However I think that there is plenty of room for filter effect on leads and bass , live, playing arpeggios live while tweaking....and that sorta thing...however its not godly and i dont think enough guys out there are making full use of the live situation.

Even we have a big playback element to our sets... but for sure having live instruments helps make the point that it's live, even to people who normally wouldn't care less. In a similar fashion - and even if you're not a fan of their music - SUN Project are great live in many ways including the technical, as are Son Kite.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I also think that 'live' acts are way over-rated here in SA.... well.. most of them.

Turning a few knobs isn't playing live....

Seeing SUN Project play.... now THAT'S a live instrumental experience.

Peace.

          Mind my mind.

the worst thing is, they always play the same tracks. it's like they mix a few of their tracks together at home and let it play at a party. all they do then is make the eq'ing look hardcore..

then, when they finally play a dj set for a change, they still play the same, lame old tracks and mostly their own, again, as well..

$noop live act at vortex pls

hehehe...

best part is when the dj fucks up the eq'ing....

er i mean the pretend eqing....

pretends to wind the eq as the tracks winds up....but misses the cresendo or whatever...

my other favourite eq'ing trick, is the constant fucking miniscule tweaks of the eq...called trimming...

now lots of respect to those of you who are really good djs

but to those that constantly twiddle the eq knobs a micro-fraction left or right, and touches the knobs before throwing your hands in the air ...

give it a break.... some of us actually know wtf is going on.

ooopss...a bit off topic

Its a common discussion....
-Is it live if its pre-programmed?

Psychedelic trance is complex music (correct me if im wrong) and its not easy to make it as live as a rock concert (keep in mind that MANY rock concerts are playback shit style).
Bringing, connecting and making a live performance that is 100% live, i suppose is impossible.

First of all you'd need a sequencer from another planet capable of processing the huge amount of midi signals, this would shurely take one computer alone, then comes the synthetics; For this you would need at least 2 synths (AT LEAST) and a shitload of preprogramming, perhaps a computer for the now popular VST instruments. Then you have the effects, yet another computer, and at this point you might be able to say: This was partially live.
To make a such LIVE would take years of preperation and the method is far from the productions we use, this means you would need to compromise your sound quality/diversity and stop what you are doing in order to make something else....
In the end i think few people would appreciate a such live even if its interresting...

As for my/our own appearences we did cd's in the start... Being a poor musician without the laptop that is the only way... we didnt do our project to make money and its always been a wish to make it even more live....

This year we(AnnoyingNinjas) introduced our project to a new dimension, a dual laptop setup in ableton live. One computer holds the mixes, master effects and channel EQ's while the other holds patterns, synth control, sound effects, loops, etc... a LIVE midi communication is going on.... That is the closest i got so far... ;D

Thats all i know

Good luck finding some real live live live....

(BTW my lead synth was played by S.U.N. project live, cause they forgot their own, interresting constallation they got going!)

first off i would like to point out i am not affiliated with code a, in any way whatsoever...

secondly i am very passionate about PSY trance.....

thirdly...not everyone is just going to fall into line with the rest of you worker ants...

we all have opinions and on this forum we are allowed to voice them.

and on a final note. please refrain from swearing. i find it offensive.

i think hallucinogen has got a pretty good "live" setup , routing his tracks through a mixer, then actually mixing them live, with fx etc

the most live set i have ever seen is that of Goldfish (cape town electronic jazz live act)..

they dont use any computers....only synths and live instruments..routed through a mixer....

there music is simpler than psy...

but i rate with careful planning and creativity , live could really be called live...

it would take alot of plannig...in the form of having the correct loops , wavs etc...as well as having many controllers

maybe lets take this topic to a more constructive level. those who want to participate please do, and lets get some artist participation....

so lets as a SA psy hivemind discuss live propally and throw some ideas out there for setups, and how to make live as live as possible....

everyone game?

Hilight Tribe and the already mentioned S.U.N. Project are REAL live acts. About the knob-turning guys, I don't know WHAT they're doing on stage.
