We've stopped using blacklights in our outdoor events, favoring instead the light of the fire at nite and the sun during the day...
here is an excerpt from the Anam Cara, a Book of Celtic Wisdom, regarding the importance of "Candlelight Perception". Interested to hear other ides on the subject.
Do you prefer blacklight or natural light in outdoor events?

"There is unprecedented spiritual hunger in our times. More and more people are awakening to the inner world. A thirst and hunger for the eternal is coming alive in our souls; this is a new form of consciousness. Yet one of the damaging aspects of this spiritual hunger is the way it sees everything in such a severe and insistent light. The light of modern consciousness is not gentle or reverent; it lacks graciousness in the presence of mystery; it wants to unriddle and control the unknown. Modern consciousness is similar to the harsh and brilliant white light of a hospital operating theater. This neon light is too direct and clear to befriend the shadowed world of the soul. It is not hospitable to what is reserved and hidden.
... When the spiritual search is too intense and hungry, the soul stays hidden. The soul was never meant to be seen completely. It is more at home in a light that is hospitable to shadow. Before electricity, people used candlelight at night. The ideal light to befriend the darkness, it gently opens up caverns in the darkness and prompts the imagination into activity. The candle allows the darkness to keep its secrets. There is shadow and color within every candle flame. CANDLELIGHT PERCEPTION IS THE MOST RESPECTFUL AND APPROPRIATE FORM OF LIGHT WITH WHICH TO APPROACH THE INNER WORLD. It does not force our tormented transparency upon the mystery. The glimpse is sufficient. Candlelight perception has the finesse and reverence appropriate to the mystery and autonomy of soul. Such perception is at home at the threshold. It neither needs nor desires to invade the temenos (temple or sanctuary) where the divine lives."           Bringing Dreams to Life!

interesting... i would definitely agree that candle light is wonderful for inward journeys, especially when you're alone.

though at parties i don't mind a bit of blacklight. i don't find it as invasive as neon lighting and it sure helps navigate in the darkness.
          ..it's just another party..

i think it depends on the party you make..

if you want to make a fairytale land with 3d backdrops you need blacklights..

one party in Kilsbergen outside of örebro they had this huge castle like bakdrops.. it looked like you came to a fairytale... very cool... and i bet very intense for tripping

though i like best simple, some cool backdrops, maybe some candle lights(the big ones that burn long) and some decorative small ones, maybe inside some glass... or hang them in threes...

it depends on the party and what kind of feelings you want to spread....

blacklights make me feel kinda funny... i love a full moon or fire.. back to basics the chill out at gaian mind was gorgeous with fluoro deco but when i was flying it was way too much on my eyes.. i wished the lights themselves had cases so they can be angled at the art to light it up without getting it in your eyes directly (the light i mean not the art )... for gatherings i definitely enjoy the flames

I have always been a fan of having lighting of any sort, save the obnoxious club lighting, at events. I can be really nightblind at times and not being able to see really can affect my mood and therefore my ultimate enjoyment of an event. If it's a well moonlit night, then perhaps the need for less lighting is indeed appropriate, however too little lighting can also give the impression that not enough attention was paid to decoration of the event. These events are for multiple senses and most of the time a couple of senses get left out in the course of creating an event.

That being said, I do enjoy natural backgrounds such as the mojave, where it would also be impractical to have deco hanging anyway, however these events are a showcase of art, not neccesarrily just music. To deny psychedelic decor artists an opportunity to showcase their talents to a crowd that would be able to appreciate their efforts would be as bad as having a phat house party at your place and not inviting your neighbors over even though they'd love to come...

I do think however that all this should be in moderation, not complete expulsion, and investing in blacklights that have a bit of a sheath to direct the light would be an excellent idea... Sounds like a burner project to me... That way you can get the best of both worlds...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I'm a big fan of properly used blacklights, and I guess by 'proper use' I mean aimed directly where they're supposed to be and not bleeding too much. Hoods or covers of some fashio are a good call. I like (and paint) fluoro stuff, so they're needed.

Candlelight makes me a bit nervous for some reason...might be the flickering or something. A combo of both is ideal...everything in moderation.

.. thats sounds like such a good idea. I'm gonna steal it

... otherwise i prefer just a dj booth and some lighting for him and a few fires scattered around.. but no lights designating a floor or dance area. I like the open feeling of having no boundaries.. just a shaman and his music.

Natural light during night? (Moon?) Nope. Neons at night? YES.
