I think it depends on many things. Usually a set starting with a good beatmatching is very promissing, but it's difficult to know that the djs are changing.
A pause is good to make clear that another DJ is playing.
But I don't like pauses.
Unless there's a striptease But the next DJ better come fast

---oh come ON. its hardly as serious as that.
if someone has a special opening or something they should get to drop it. it sets the tone for the rest of their set. not that its NECESSARY to have a silence and then an opening track, just that a killer well-beatmatched set that opens with silence and then an opening track- thats not grounds for calling a DJ BAD or anything or saying they should stop DJ'ing.

its just a taste thing and i can see both sides...

I am not sure you understood my point

I'll try and explain it more simple.

My point is that if a DJ dont even know how to find a track that will suit the last track the previous DJ played then maybe he/she should go home and pratice some more before playing again

See my point now or?

this makes sense.

however, if you are a touring dj, act, artist, etc.
you may have a whole set planned, or maybe the intro planned etc...the various people you may be playing after may have different sets/styles etc...

sometimes there just isn't a transition- i've played after a house dj before and my set isn't going to have any progressive housey stuff in it.
sometimes its ok to change gears.

what is most important to me as a DANCER is that the dj is consistent and then once their little deviation has been adjusted to, its all smooth sailing from there. a genuinely bad dj might just totally ignore any cohesion this way...

now, if this travelling dj is a label manager and has 600,000 unreleased tracks to choose from, it might not be too much to ask them to transition...

i think it can sound very weird if u move from full on to prog or the other way around. if u wanna somehow makes the hole thing flow u need to continue at least for 2-3 tracks in the same direction the one before u played so it will sound good and the changes between the styles will be nice to the ear. and the best solution for this will be to think about the right line up that will create a build up from the djs styles.
let's take a walk on the proogy side

If I havn't prepared a special beginning and the dj before me plays in the same style I will always do a mix unless:
- I was asked not to do
- the dj before me played a really good set so I will let him have the handclap he/she deserves

I don't like the breaks followed by the moment you are "supposed" to clap. A dj should earn this, when it becomes a standard it looses its effect.

i like breaks i must admit, it lets me keep in tune with the schedule of the evening. i like to know what dj is playing when, especially if ive come to see someone specific playing. a little intro at the beginning gives each set a nice formality to everything: like as if the dj is saying, buckle up!! a little calm before the storm works wonders IMO...           ****andmysoulsbeenpsychedelicized****
