1. Would you pay to download music from a reliable source?
-Yes
2. Would reliable service (ie: better download times) or better quality mp3 formats be a motivating factors in whether you would purchase tracks online?
-Yes, I am only going to pay for t1 or t3 speeds so that means 100ks or up on my 512/128 cable connection...I am NOT gonna pay for mp3. I want ISO images of the actual CDs then. No compressed audio. Don't give me crap about filesize and stuff. I need 2 hours to download an ISO from an XDCC bot. Furthermore, Albums should be released on the Net earlier or at the same time as the CD.

3. What other services could an online retailer offer to make it more appealing to pay to download music?
-Sleeves, booklets included.

everything is in place for this right now
the distribution channels are obviously there.
I think it would make much more sense to just start a database of artist paypal accounts.

We are planning on making a system similar to this sometime later this year... there are many MP3s available for download on our site, and we hope to work out a way for users to order a custom-built compilation with songs of their choosing. Much remains to be sorted out however, as we would want to deliver the service with high-quality printing and a good presentation, while ensuring the artists recieve just compensation for their time.

Two issues that have been floating around in my head recently are the future of music piracy and the 'disposable' music trends. I can't see a world in 5 to 10 years where MP3s are being traded... bandwidth and hard disk space is going to take a giant leap forward, and at some point traders will be sending CD-quality .wavs, with hi-rez scans of covers. Even now there is some aspect of trading mp3s which still promotes music purchasing - but I can't see that being maintained when the ethically slippery have the choice of real-quality downloads for free. When CD sales are considered substantial when they hit the 500 mark *these days*, what hope does the conventional establishment have in the future?

Another repercussion of low CD sales seems to be a limitation in the variety of styles offered. Unpopular styles are quickly culled; written off as financial suicide for a label. I won't outline what styles are affected, but the overall effect of this situation is a restriction of innovation, experimentation, or even nostalgia. Its tough to peek into the future, but I see a possible opening in this notion of online music sales - it is new ground (for the trance community) to break into... not a place I expect anyone to make their fortune, for sure, but perhaps online music sales are a realm in which the piracy trend can be subverted in part, or the homogeny of modern psytrance can be shattered back into ever-evolving fragments...

Well, just some thoughts. Naturally I'll keep everyone quite informed of our own foray into this territory. And, as a whole, I think its an understatement to say the next few years are going to be an exciting time for trance!

Once trading abilities increase to full quality wav files sales will die. You can't live on the good will of people. The illegal sources has to be shut down.

I think one of the biggest problems is the musical quality of many albums and compilations. Often only a couple of tracks are good. Seems that labels are trying to compensate for lost sales by emphasizing quantity over quality.

Selling mp3s (@320) could be a solution. Or it could kill the sales even more, as people won't buy albums anymore, just tracks. Though it could increase the quality of the music, since we'll have more choice on what to buy.

Besides, CDs and all that plastic - that so much waste!!!! Most people I know dump the covers and the sleeves and all and stick the cds in the CD wallets. Landfill, baby..

This has already happened. The MP3 release group Psytopia, which, to date, has focused mostly on releasing 320 kbps MP3s of out of print psy albums, has now begun spreading Monkey's audio lossless compression files ( http://www.monkeysaudio.com ) of new albums. For instance, I was able to download a new album, from an unnamed Israeli group, and uncompress them to .wav files. I now possess a perfect copy of this album. Fortunately, I am not a pirate, and I purchase all albums I like.

What is the need for anyone to have a bit-perfect copy of an album, without paying for it? What the fuck was Psytopia thinking when they allowed this? Releasing VBR and 320 kbps mp3s, and .ape files is highly unethical, IMHO.

hey everyone as a label owner and a music distributor I have to add my 50 cents to the discussion.

Regarding Itunes: first of all it is already available for pc users (I have it on my pc)

second: the idea of being able to download tracks out of full cds and creating your own compilations from the tracks you really like is the best idea possible, and serves the interest of all the music industry in a way.

The fact that apple managed to sell so much music through its services is a proof that this system has a future also in our small scene.

My view of things is that if we , the labels/artists could use this system to our benefit and convince even 20% of ppl who are downloading from p2p softwares for free or even the normal shop buyers, to pay 99 cent per track we did a small step forward from the situation today.

Ican tell you that as itunes calculate today they take 20 cents to themselves and the rest goes to the label/artist. 80 cents is MUCH more than the artist get on a normal royalty calculation between himself and the label (generally speaking of course).

Plus this option we are given as customers to choose the tracks we like and download only them will get labels and artists to work harder in order to convince people to take their tracks thus leading to an improvement in the quality of released material.

But as a summary i can tell you that this system is good only for people who appreciate and want to contribute to the effort done by the labels and artists to survive in this cruel and unthankful market,
These people are the ones who are anyway still buying original cds.

The free downloaders and music swapper will not approve to this new system simply because they do not give a damn about art or appreciate anything but themselves, but this is another well wared-out subject

Naturlijk

I will always buy an album and pay the money. Not only do you get the "package" of having a beautifully mastered piece of another persons art, and a nice cover too, you having the gratifaction of knowing that your putting back in. Support the small record shop! support the label! Feed the artist caviare! mp3's sound like shit on a good system just like burnt cds.
