Of course there's no such thing as a perfectly accurate abstraction - it's impossible to convey exact thoughts and emotions. That goes without saying. BUT, the communication inside the music works on a different level than talking. And none the less deep - sometimes much more. If you want to compare it to the written word, then Robert Frost would be the point of comparisson, but again, that's only because he uses powerful rhythmic/sound tools to create a vivid scene.

But again, this analogy is SOOOOOOOO far from complete. While language is tainted with supposed meaning, not allowing it to be pure abstraction and held down on a day-to-day basis, by the fact that each word in so many contexts that it is impossible to use it without it having concrete value for both the person who uses it and the listener. The amount of improvisation in using spoken or written language is limited by the number of words, that the words must have meaning, grammar, and trying to get a proper order in things. These concrete limitations do not exist in electronic music (even though sometimes people accept the limits anyways and work within known fomrulae, this is far from being a necessity).

The fact that the artist doesn't do exactly what he intended, well, no one ever does. People just don't think about how clunky other forms of communicating are in comparisson, but think of how ridiculous conveying emotions in photos is or creating something truely nonlinear with sculpting is. Each form of expression has it's own limits and strengths, but psytrance's main strength is that it is not naturally connected with connotations, and even while the artist may not be 100% accurate in his expression, the understanding of the track can in many ways be as deep as possible by the listener.

And about NOT everyone being a citizen - well, I met some ska fans that defined good music as something they can drink and have fun to, while saying electronic music, 60s-70s music, and all forms of orchestral music are shit, and admitted that they think that way because they are totally not trying to find anything inside the music. I admit - it's rather easy being a citizen. All you have to do is try. Some people don't.

Kitnam: no need to be sorry about anything, a good debate always has more than one side.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222
