L.A. interest in goa?

I hope this is the appropriate forum for this.

I'm planning to throw an old school goa party in the summer (yay!). I'm only concerned that it hasn't been done before in my area (hmm). Los Angeles has some good psy organizers and fullon/progressive djs, but no oldschool parties that I'm aware of. By old school I mean up to 1998.

I don't think Europe should have all the goa fun. But before I jump off the deep end, I wanted to test the waters and ask who'd be interested in attending (possibly even contributing to) this event... would other crusty nostalgics come out to such a party in L.A.?

I'd be interested in going, though I live in Colorado now. It might be old school for you, but it would be lots of new music for me as I hadn't even heard of psytrance until the end of 2007. I have wondered about the music I missed in the early years psytrance and I like the type often referred to as Goa, which is also still being made nowadays. I have heard selected songs from that time, but to have a few sets or a gathering organized around it would be something I'd like to experience. A group in Israel did something like this last winter that I sorely would have liked to attend. You might connect with some of them as a few live in Los Angeles and also are a part of Psytribe. It seems lots of people like Goa psytrance, but it isn't much played at the gatherings I attend. And how about later in the year as in October or November? Or are you planning on an indoor event? I am used to going to the desert in that area which are extremely hot in the summer and you haven't stated your intended venue yet. Though I suppose interest in such a gathering might determine just where you will have it too.           - - -

That's encouraging to hear. Yes, I'm still looking at venues... I'd like to have it indoors in a bar or loft, not too far from L.A.

Thanks for the lead. I'll try asking about it at the next Psytribe... I'm not a regular at their parties, but I know a couple of the organizers.

I can't say that this particular style of gathering has crossed my agenda, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't support it! I support any and all activity having to do with psychedelic trance... as long as it is being done with the most pure intentions. And since this is coming from your own musical passion/nostalgia, there is no intention purer.

As a side note, you might want to BE a regular at some of the local psy gatherings if you're planning to throw them. I can't think of a better way to connect with people. I can tell you that this scene comes down to personal connections more than anything. No amount of hype, and no lineup can substitute for the people who are known, loved, and put work into this scene. And basically what I mean is, it is very very hard for any new organizer to get the street credit to pull a crowd to a party. Sometimes the best way to do that is to connect with crowds/scenes with similar intentions. That said, I might be off base here. You might attend a lot of the other socal trance gatherings, and just not go to Psytribe. I know there are a few of those for sure.

Your next challenge would be finding people who are still passionate about this music, and would feel like playing it. You might be able to get some of the older DJs in the scene to play out some retro sets, but I'm really not sure. As you said, this is really not typical in our scene. I know that guys like Aerosis are trying to bring back the Goa vibe in a new way. It's not old music, but it has some of the same vibes. Where would you draw the line exactly? Would people have to be playing old music, or music that sounds more retro? If you want exclusively authentic <=1998 Goa Trance, you will have to look around for people who are down to play it.

As for venues... well you can certainly find places; and it largely depends on your budget, the hours you want, and how big you want to make this.           http://www.soundcloud.com/djKAHN

I went to a lot of events in 1999-2003, including some Psytribe, but after 2004 I started exploring other genres of music and drifted off the radar. There's definitely a need to re-connect and extend feelers back into the party scene.

Definitely, that is the challenge. I'm open to some new school Goa being played (possibly even a closing set) but the party focus should be on the old/rare, similar to what Goat Ranch features. Right now 2 slots are taken and 1-2 more are needed, depending on the hours I can reserve (2 hours per dj = more journey-like sets).

If it fit in my schedule I would go.
a night of old/new driving goa would get me out before a night of prog/tech (music wise not people).
there are not many people who are vocal on this forum in southern california so The face book may be a better place to do your fishing (don't know if you have I'm not on the book) or even better as Khan said go to parties and talk to people.

so is this a whole night of goa? mixing styles up is always a good idea. quality space rock/tribal bands would be cool if indoors in the earlier hours (up till 11) and would bring in a different crowd to introduce your vision. unless your starting 10/11ish till 2 then just dj's is cool, but starting early with the same sort'ov nostalgia in a band setting could help off set your cost (people drinking at the bar) and warm everyone up to blast off. idk

just sharing my pennies
hope all of this works out for you and the community

I think there are plenty of regulars who support trance gatherings in southern and northern California that would enjoy an old school Goa themed event.

I would go, but not if it was indoors. I live in socal so I can dance in the desert. I don't care how hot it gets during the day. An old school Goa party should mostly be a night party anyway (imo), starting at sunset during a full moon and ending with a long blistering melodic set through sunrise and a couple hours of daylight.

Good luck!

Well if the gig is still happening, I'm sure to join you guys.
Be nice to see how you "northerns" throw a gig. From what i've read the scene is wayyyyyyy different from what i'm used to.

So. Here's an update.

The party will be happening in mid-July. I'm close to making an official announcement. It will be indoors at a venue near DTLA; we're planning some surprises to cheer up people who live for the outdoor party.

We're starting at 7-8PM and finishing at 2-2:30. The plan is to begin with chilled sounds and dub, and take it into acid house, Goan trance and psy; showing different facets of old school Goa while having a natural flow to the night.

There will be 3-4 djs; I'm waiting on one dj to tell me his preferred set length. Once the lineup is finalized full party info, flyer ect. will go out!

Not specifically... from what I know and what the three of us have discussed, we're favoring older music. It may crop up -- I'm not going to be an era nazi -- but expect mostly old school
