This is one of the only tracks I've ever posted online in all my years on the forum, or even since I started producing.

So uh... treasure this memory

I've only just started to settle into my own style, so I'm starting to want more feedback.

Also, I tend to bend genres and a lot of what I make wouldn't fit on this forum.

Anyway, this is a sort of psy-breaks mashup I'm working on at the moment. Any general feedback at all would be nice.

My main problems seem to be:

1)
The bassline changes quite severely at a couple of points, and I like both.
I don't know whether I can rescue the song from 'kitchen sink' syndrome, ie - too many ideas at once. Should I give it an overall theme, or go balls out and switch it up cleverly at different points?

2)
The arrangement. It's only 3 minutes long because I'm working on sound design for the moment.
Although, the intro makes NO sense. Its a distorted mess, into the first bassline, then into a different one.. I really like where this tune is going, but I've got tunnel vision and confused myself. I've been working on it too long, so another set of ears on it would be nice.

3)
Dull melodies. Yeah, I know. A fair amount of notes and melody needs to be altered, I'll get to that later, I was mainly focusing on all the FX and mix at the moment.

4)
Any general mix comments would be nice.

So.. enjoy

+: The electro thing is not my cup of tea, but I really like the gliding (?) bass, the melodies, the 8-bit like sounds, the sample, the melodies and the pan travelling pad..

-: I feel a lack of bass freqs (especially at low volume)

As I suspected, not everyone's style. But thank you for your comment.

I intend to twist it up a bit and hopefully it should come out more psy that electro. The arrangement isn't helping it at the moment.

I've tested the song in my car, with sub, and the bass is not deficient.

although there are some hints of electro, to me this still sounds more break-ish. i think it's pretty interesting and if you "psy it up" a bit more, it should come out really cool. the bass is not deficient, but it's pretty subby. maybe bring up the body of the bass a bit more, as mid-bass seems to lack a bit. i can see how to someone without a subwoofer it would seem pretty weak.

i'm curious to hear where you go with this, so post your progress.

I love it! Really awesome...The basslines are awesome.

Really like the way you first introduce the bassline. How did you get it so woomfy? That first note hit me square in the chest. I dig the fact that it's quite subby.

Hello Tomos,
This snare needs some more power ! It sounds nice, maybe you could layer another snare with more highs. Remove a bit of reverb maybe? it seems that the snare is a bit back of the mix.

I like the sound of the bass, very punchy and clean. The intro is heeeeeeee ...not that good. I love the leads. As Septa said, push the psychedelic thing ! Some nice modulated synth sequence over it could bring magic. I love psybreaks! go go go you've got a track!

Thanks for the comments yveusss

Intro is pants! I agree

Been doing a lot of work on this to whip it into shape, it's becoming more psy, tighter. Agree the snare was way far back in the mix, thanks for the confirmation, bit to 'verby too. So it sits more upfront.

Has anyone else here tried to make breaks? The difference is that in Trance the KICK+BASS is what makes the track, whereas in breaks its the KICK+SNARE combo that has to be perfect. But I can't seem to get the snare sounding loud enough without massive peaks.. any ideas?

In fact I tried to create a break track once and indeed the snare is different than in our usual psy. In dnb / dubstep the snare is louder and wider. In fact, yesterday evening I imported your tracks in Live and added a bright snare, hi-passed, compressed and with a pitch down enveloppe (tape stop fx in glitch) over your mp3. I think it brings subjective power to the snare without boosting the level too much. Otherwise, I think your mix is really good.

My suggestion - NY compresson on the percussion, or just the snare if you prefer. Assuming all your percussion is already EQd and perhaps compressed individually:
* Send all the perc to a subgroup (A)
* Pre-fade send @ 0dB from that group to another group (B)
* Put a ridiculously slamming characterful compressor (attack = 0ms, adjust release to taste but fairly short) on group B, smash smash smash that percussion!
* Set level of group A so the perc is just a tad too quiet
* Bring the fader of group B up from -oo until the perc sounds phat...

Another way of doing it - perhaps easier - is to subgroup the perc and stick a comp on the group; choose one that has a dry/wet mix control. Smash the perc with the compressor, I mean really smash the fucker, then bring the mix control gradually from dry to wet until you find a good balance between the compressed and uncompressed versions.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Ahhh.. Colin. You really are a f*in' legend. Big hugs mate! Haven't used the NY trick in a long time.

One of my issues with producing, is that I'm all happy fiddling with levels and writing the actual tune. But getting all the track elements peachy, requires a level of technical right-brain skill that is so dull and distracting.

Sometimes it's hard to stay committed to the final product, if you get what I mean.

I'm still working on this track, promise I'll re-up it when I'm a bit further along and happier.

In another thread I mentioned I'm now single .. and how I've mediated that issue by spending all my money! I've moved to Cubase 5 this week and the transition has been less than smooth. An -as yet- unidentified plugin is spectacularly crashing the sequencer, so I'm a bit behind.
