When you hear a track and you know it's a FAT one, you listen for how it's arranged. Bassline and percussion is first and then come different elements like tweaks, pads, bleeps, harmonic melodies...but all these must be panned the right way and aranged in a sense that there is not a single empty second in the track. |

what is killer for you is maybe s**t for others and "viceversa"
this is totally subjective.
but some people have some kind of criterias and from that they make the difference between what is killha and what is not.
here are a small list (hope I will not make it too complicate):
1)the hypocrite: what is killer is what other says (normally he/she has heard from people who he/she think that they're just kool or maybe because they're talented for that task) so he/she follow the fashion/commercial/format/use and throw tendencies.
2)the casual: he/she think that it's killha with no criteria just because they say it.
3)the mafia: they say it's killha because it's their label or project the criteria is what is killa is what I do.
4)the right one:Usually number 1,2,3 is what they claim to be.
5)the technical:he/she says what is killha using what is called A/B comparison so they can say what is better between this two.
ok hope it is not too complicated but less or more this is are the principal reason on the killer subject hope it helped you guys...

bassline is the shit. it's the only thing which makes a track killer
in fact, i hope they will start making trance without all the bullshit around the bassling like kicks and percusison.

oh almost forgot to respond to the topic:
I look for a phat bassline with more than 2 notes...maybe a lil melodic...something tribal or 'shake your booty' -style but not cheesy
percussion is also a must... i like added complimentary beats to the kick.
lots o' layers - minimal is definitely not for me, I like a very layered psychedelic sound..but not so much so that you can't hear any distinct elements in the track
which leads me to the last but not least point, which is production... this is key, and is something often times overlooked. you can have well produced gritty, crunchy sounds or you can have poorly produced clean bouncy sounds...
optional: melodies are optional for me but much appreciated... i like artists that are real musicians and know music theory, chord progressions, etc. a double + for artists who can make a track with all these elements + a melody and have it STILL sound psychedelic. (shift and penta are the masters on this IMO ) |
