indeed... usually either a beefy kick or a beefy bass, not both... but kick's body + click doesn't necessarily mean a big banger of a Kick, can be subtle and fit inside the mix, the click is more like: does it cut through the mix or not? if not, click it!

compromise is what this game's all about

you can't get the modern Kick from either bazzism or Maschine's drum synthesis module, or Massive or anything... you can use these sounds, but coupled with something else, otherwise, it will either have a sharp transient but not so much weigh on the bottom or the other way around, no matter how many envelopes you're using. better to render it down to audio and apply some pitch shift envelope afterwards, then two envelopes on the same synthesizer, also, but even so, probably going to be lacking somewhere.

This comment made me curious so I did a quick test with Massive and ended up with the following result: http://puretone.nl/files/Massive%20Quick%20Kick%20Test.wav

This is a single sine wave OSC with one envelope going to the pitch and one for the AMP (No filter) followed by EQ, compression and limiting. It would need to be tweaked a bit for proper use in a track and the end of the kick needs trimming but otherwise not too shabby for a quick test.

What do you think?

Oh my my! Alastair!!! You are back??? Great to see you old friend!!! How have you been?

What I think of the kick? Pretty good, except the bottom is a bit long... but then again... it is a good kick and as you said one can always cut a bit...

I'm fine how are you? I just came round to see how things were going around these parts.

Indeed. That kick needs trimming and fading at the end. It isn't just that it is too long but there is a kind of floppy sound at the end of the release that would need to be removed before using the kick properly in a production.

Anyway, it was just a quick test to see if I could produce a kick with low end and the initial snappy attack using Massive without extra layering. Clearly it is possible and that is with only a single sine oscillator and two envelopes. There are still more oscillators and envelopes to shape the kick further...
