Hi folks,

I started 3 years ago back in Brazil were i had my first Cubase classes with a psychedelic trance producer, as everything was new for me i did not ask this question by that time but that bugs me since.

My teacher use to say that i should always load my bassdrum into my first MONO channel of my drum machine.

He said that it's more punchy or something but i never really got the point. My cousin was studying with me by that time but he took production much more serious than me and now he's releasing tracks here and there always loading his bassdrum as MONO.

Botton line, what's the real dif. between Mono and Stereo for the KICK?

Thank you guys!

Yesterday i wanted to start a similar thread here, but forgot =)

I always make the kick mono, but i have discovered, that in most sound libraries the kickdrum samples are stereo. More, left and right channel differ. Why?

I personally have heard only one track with succesfull and creative use of stereo-kick - this one - http://www.trackitdown.net/genre/trance/track/471661.html           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

So I can't do this natively ?

Damn, it looks such a basic function.

Thanks for your answer m8 !

Most of the energy in a mix is at the bottom end. When I released my first record in 2003 I went to the mastering suite to have a chat with the engineer, watch a professional work on my tunes and ask questions, including this one. Big low stereo parts basically throw the needle of the record (obviously CDs don't suffer from this) and due to the the fact that the human ear starts loosing directionality below 300hz, there is no need to have big stereo bass sounds.
And also I want the kick and bass to be right smack in the middle, coming out of each side with equal power, hence I keep everything in mono.
But I always use a stereo synth patch when I layer a top line over the bassline. So I get big stereo size in the mids and a solid bottom end.

http://www.dark-zlime.de.tl/Live-Downloads.htm

here you can download a dual stereo pan for ableton live free..just drag and drop it in audio fx rack folder in live , then load the plugin to your channel and turn left and right into middle position..there you go"mono"

its like the stereo dual pan in protools or cubase..

cheers

Much simpler than Medea's idea: Use Live's Utility plugin and only select L or R. For mono sum you need to bounce the track.

+1 I even like to keep the side chain in mono. In stereo there can be slight variances in phasing, so from a purist's perspective mono is the way to go. with stereo plugins you still should be able to send them to a mono bus for summing, or as others mentioned with a plugin           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!
