KA-POW 2006 Review:
"Everything is Sacred. But I'll tell you what's NOT
sacred. When somebody comes up to you shaking their
finger and saying "This is SACRED! This is SACRED!!""
-Dan Covan
The summer of 2006 will be remembered as the summer of
rainy festivals. Everyone I talked with had stories -
and every festival I attended was the same - rain.
Gaian Mind Summer Fest, Firefly, Turkey - the only
party I can remember with a clear summer night sky
(other than the PSI Pine Barrnes parties!!) was one we
had up here in Massachusetts - and that was broken up
at 2:30AM by Federal Park Rangers who stood over us
and watched as we broke down the system and loaded it
back into our vehicles.
KA-POW 2006 was no exception. Despite being on some of
the most gorgeous land I've ever partied on, KA-POW
was unable to escape Mother Nature's cruel tricks. Yet
like all rainy festivals before, nothing could stop
the music from playing and copious amounts of fun from
being had. And like most festivals, some of the best
memories I have from this event were those that took
place away from the main stage. In fact, some took
place AFTER the party had ended!
Yes, AMAZING sets were played - namely by the likes of
Loopus, KRI, ShapeStatic, Spook, WitchDokta, HujaBoy,
KT, and the two guys who played well into Saturday
afternoon (I think they go by Chameleon and
Labyrinth?). And yes, INSANE deco was installed -
particularly by Blue Spectral Monkey, Serena, Shane,
and Alex of the TOUCH Samadhi crew. And all that
formed some kind of weird backdrop for the moments I
will take from this party and store in my memory bank
forever.
Picture it. POURING RAIN... A torrential onslaught to
say the least. It is Sunday morning around 3:00AM.
Marria and I are sitting in camping chairs by our
tent, safely under the protection of a 40' x 40' tarp.
We're looking out into darkness, geeking out at every
passing flashlight and hearing the muffled sounds of
KRI and HujaBoy's performing musical masterpieces.
Rain falling on the tarp and our voices are the only
sounds outside those booming from the mainstage. We
begin to talk... and talk.... and talk... The
conversation revolves around the fact that this summer
has been a reminder that we need to appreciate the
festivals we do have and not let the expectations of
"more" and "better" get the best of us. As a
community, it seems the US has taken for granted that
the weather will be perfect at every festival we
attend. Loopus and Beat Bizarre playing on a gorgeous
Sunday morning at GMSF2K4. Freq, Phony Orphants, and
Emok playing to a Swiss Alps sunrise that made more
people on the dancefloor cry than when Son Kite played
at Gratitude. ALL the Pine Barrens parties!!!! We've
been spolied and summer 2006 was nature's way of
saying "Remember to remember to good times! Remember
the good moments and when they arrive, make sure you
appreciate them!"
We talked for what seemed to be four hours or more...
All the way from how much we miss our friends who have
moved (We love you Dean, Shannon, Eric, and Alex!) to
what has now become known as "The Dave Henshaw
must-have festival camping kit." (aka - a large tarp,
six ratchet straps, two camping chairs, and a Gerber
folding trenching shovel.) I'm not 100% sure what got
us out of the zone - perhaps what sounded like a
scream coming from the mainstage, perhaps a change in
musical form altogether - I dunno. But we stopped
talking, looked up, and it was no longer raining. In
fact, the sun was breaking through the clouds and the
ground in front of us looked DRY!! Immediately, we
bolted up to the top of the hill to look down and
observe the dancefloor. When we got up to the perch,
what we saw was over 100 happy dancers, a sunrise like
you only see in postcards, and two of the most bouncy
and happy musicians we'd seen in a while. I speak of
Dean and Dan - aka Onnomon.
From an extreme distance, there was no mistaking the
energy, the constant motion, and the simply bonking
style these two geniuses bring to the stage. And, of
course, the dancefloor responded. We continued our
talk from under an apple tree, one ear to the music
(which was simply brilliant, in my mind the best set
of the festival) and one ear on each other. Needless
to say, almost as though we had willed this moment to
happen - we were living it. Perfect music, perfect
sunrise, perfect weather, and a myriad of smiling
faces and hula hoops all around... We had told
ourselves to appreciate these moments only a few hours
earlier. And when the moment came, we were in full
appreciation! Better yet... It was a picture perfect
moment... And we left the camera in the tent!!!
The deneumeut of the story? About an hour after Dean
and Dan were done playing, we found ourselves sitting
at the dancefloor when Dan came over and sat down. As
the three of us spoke, Marria tried to explain the
moment and what her and I had talked about... Dan
looked at her - with that "of course" look in his eye
and said "Yeah, it's an old Mayan saying: "Remember to
Remember." At that point, I think a new T-shirt idea
was born in Marria's head.
Later that morning, we went down behind the chill-out
for a swim. Jumping in quick and getting out slow, we
pulled up along the dock to smoke a bit. Two guys we
didn't know but found out were named Jonathan and
Steve, from Atlanta and Asheville respectively pulled
up next to us and we all started talking. Like so many
Asheville folks, Steve looked like he was living in
the wrong century - a wise, weathered face - a
welcoming smile, and eyes that you knew HAD to have
thousands of years of knowledge behind them. Though he
admitted to not really knowing all that much about the
music and the culture, the information he provided us
about poisonous water snakes was worth its weight in
gold. Honestly, I don't know why this little
interaction had such an effect on me. Here in
Massachusetts, we don't have such snakes and swimming
anywhere is fine. In fact, until this weekend, I often
though of Cottonmouths as nothing more than a myth -
some kind of legend to keep kids from swimming in Lake
Okechobee. Steve set us straight, even going as far as
to say (and this coming from a guy who looked like
NOTHING could scare him). "Yeah, man. Poisonous water
snakes? They really freak me out." Its the kind of
interaction you only get at events like this - meeting
and chatting with folks who you may have nothing in
common with other than the music you enjoy - and
people yo may have never met had it not been for the
festival.
We went back to the mainstage to hear KT's set, a
relatively HIGH-energy set that swept across the
audience and kept them all dancing. It's funny,
actually, a few years back when I started writing
these stupid reviews, it was KT who jokingly said
"someday, you should mention me in one of your
reviews." Considering her Boston roots and the times
we've shared, I'd often toss her name in on some dumb
account - just for kicks. But this time around, as you
all read this, I think there needs to be some MAJOR
appreciation and major respect heading towards this
key member of our community. Say nothing of becoming
one of better female DJ's around, KT (as we found out
and also experienced first-hand) was one of the most
instrumental and critical people working to make this
whole festival happen. Whether it was arranging the
DJ's and the line-up, managing the budget, or doing
all the "little things" that nobody else really wanted
to do (like being Hujaboy's personal shuttle-service
to and from his hotel room in Hendersonville), KT
rocked out with the best of them - doing everything
and going above and beyond to make sure everyone was
in good spirts. I'm not 100% sure how much she slept,
but I can tell you the tent she set up next to our was
never used and actually did nothing but collect water
all weekend. As if the genius of KRI, Monkey, Jenna,
Serena, Shane, and the rest of the Touch Samadhi crew
wasn't enough - KT seems to have found a home and a
calling OUTSIDE the greatest city on earth.
The party came to a ceasing halt after another
FABULOUS set from Matteo (aka Loopus in Fabula.)
Though some technical problems forced Onnomon to play
longer (THANK YOU technical problems!) and KT to play
a little less (Damn you, technical problems!) - Loopus
played his live-set and his DJ sets back to back to
close out the weekend's festivities.. At the end of
the music, we reported directly to Ambrosia's for some
crazy vegan grub, and then began the long process of
tearing down our tent site and making one last ditch
effort to find my lighter and ID badge that I had lost
at the bottom of the lake.. Both were arduous, but
only one was successful.. :-(

That's when the good fortune continued... By 7:00PM,
we were rolling outta there and heading to dinner at
some pizza kitchen.. Wherever it was, Tim (the server)
dropped the ball and didn't bring Derby and Richard
enough BBQ sauce. Only the Giants, who were trailing
the Seahwaks 42-3 could have felt worse than ol'
Tim... We all went our seperate ways and Marria,
Richard and I ended up at KT's place to crash before
having to begin the journey back the next day.
Now, most people who read this know I have a little
bit of a sports problem. It's better than having a
heroin addiction, but for those who have to live with
me, it can feel just as bad. We got back to KT's at
about 8:10PM... a mere five minutes before the
Patriots were scheduled to play the Broncos on
National TV. Needless to say, I whined, I moaned, I
demanded "Simpsons" get pre-empted, and in the end,
was reluctantly allowed to watch the game.
KT and Marria - both exhausted from the weekend, all
but passed out before either team had even scored.
Marria, because she had been awake for
god-knows-how-many hours and had spent a good portion
of that time going dance-crazy with the hula-hoop -
and KT because, as luck would have it, had to be at
work in 10 hours... That left Richard and I sitting
in front of the TV to watch the game..
Now, I'm from Boston. I grew up in Maine. I take shit
because I don't like to swim without a bathing suit
on. I get heat because I can't smoke weed anymore
without getting totally sketched. I get laughed at
because I don't drink beer. For better or for worse, I
may be the closest thing to an old puritan you're
gonna find in our culture. Richard, aka
WitchDokta, struck me as pretty much the exact
opposite. A dread-locked, organic farming full-on DJ
(and a damn good one), from the foothills outside of
San Fancisco. He and I had shared a few good laughs
earlier in the day, but I was, and with good reason, a
little worried that he wasn't exactly a "fan" of the
game. And, needless to say, I was a little
apprehensive at the start that I was A) hogging the
tube and watching only what I wanted or B) watching
with a guy who didn't like football and hence would
make me feel - per usual - a little awkward or C)
Going to get some assanine lecture about how football
promotes violence on our country, how football is only
for "dumb jocks" or how football is just a bunch of
idiots beating themselves up.. (or choose your
variation on that speech.) NONE of those options could
have proven further from the truth!
By the first drive from scrimmage, Richard started
making comments about the game that cemented the fact
he was indeed a fan. Barking at the refs for making a
bad defensive pass-interference call to standing up
and cheering BEFORE a Tom Bady pass found an open Ben
Watson for a big gainer. I wasn't sure if it was the
two liters of coca-cola he had drank at dinner or
something else, but the guy was totally into the game!
In fact, by the middle of the fourth quarter, I was
dozing off only to be woken up by his cheers and
bursts of vocals. "Oh man, he was wide open!" and "Big
play - another first down!" were two I remember that
woke me from a sound sleep. The Pats ended up
losing 17-7, but I remember falling asleep thinking to
myself "I wonder where he learned so much about
Football?" (I later discovered it was from his
brother who has two DISHes on his house with the NFL
package - and who calls Richard every Sunday to do
nothing but rattle off football scores and tell him
what teams won what games..)
Like I said, sometimes the best moments happen OFF the
dancefloor - and sometimes they happen AFTER the party
is over.. It's these moments I want to remember and,
when the rain comes, or even when the winter is here
and there are no more festivals - it is these moments
I want to remember to remember...

It was a festival. And it was brilliant. From the
music to the deco to the venue itself.. TOUCH Samadhi
was able to use the mainstage for the main stage this
time, so the walk bewteen the chill-out and the
dancefloor was a mere .29 miles - as opposed to the
mile and a half it was last year. The sound system was
rocking - a booming 30,000 watt job brought in from
Kentucky and run by Lou and crew.. The lineup was
immense and did I mention the venue?? Deerfields is
EASILY and HANDS-DOWN the best place in North America
I have ever attended a party. In fact, with the
capacity, the chillness, and the HUGE covered stage,
it makes me hope that this festival will only grow
bigger and bigger (within reason, of course.) Rolling
hills, ACRES UPON ACRES of hiking trails, lakes,
forest, campsites, apple orchards! The place is a
bucolic fairy-tale land - enhanced further by being ON
the land itself!!
I dunno how to wrap this up... I haven't done this in
so long... Work, Toronto/Not Toronto, the freaking
Red Sox... I just haven't been able to gather thoughts
and write something down. Maybe I haven't been
inspired, or maybe I've just been so bloody busy..
Either way, that's that - long winded? Yeah? Anything
useful? No. Just my way of saying thanks to everyone
who came out and made this party possible. Maybe you
instead wanted it this way....
THANKS TO:
Marria: For being the best travelling partner in the
world - even when you wanna bring a case of vitamin
Water and your light-up Psi-Hoop to the festival -
without you, all this would be useless. I love you.
KRI and Jenna: For not only being behind the festival
(and Kri for playing amazing music all weekend (and
singing along to the Ticon remix of "Seventh Son.")),
but for being excellent role models - staying awake
while the "prog-heads" take naps.
Monkey and Serena - For yet another brilliant display
of deco and for rocking out at both stages. Many extra
thanks to Monkey for parting with the new banner - It
made it safely back to Boston and is now hanging in
it's place of prominence.
KT - For everything! Especially dialing in the Pats
game!
Shane and Alex - For using an old pick-up for what an
old pick-up is supposed to be used for - lugging deco
around. And, moreover, for installing that deco and
providing us all with yet another amazing display!
Althea - For just rocking out and being totally cool!
Be you down at the food tent or picking up cigarette
butts on the dancefloor, you rock!
Melanie, Rachael, and the whole fire-crew: Amazing
show at an amazing time.. A little taste of Burning
Man back here on the East Coast. You guys rock!
Derby - For providing some early morning scares on
Friday and some late afternoon laughter on Sunday with
the pickle jar.... And for all else in between!
Lou and Crew - For bringing and running an AMAZING
sound system! I mean, that thing was THROBBING!
Whoever owns The Deerfields - You guys kick ass!! I
LOVE YOUR PLACE! CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!! Can I
adopt that white cat with the gray on its face?
Salil: Well... for being Salil! I won't forget the
seeing you whip out those ponchos for all the
shivering souls on Sunday morning.. It was a moment to
remember.
Ambrosia's Delights Crew: For the food and laughter!!
Two of the most critical things in a rainstorm...
Lynn and the Chai Tent --- Amazing, as always!! And
for the tip about Floyd, Virginia. Great to hear
you've made the jump! It was an inspiration!
Jason Ross - For confirming my awe with the
Deerfields. I wish we could have spoken a bit more...
Ross - For describing the festival as "Rossome" and
rep-ree-zenting with the Manny jersey... And, of
course, for some brilliant morning hysterics during
Onnomon's set...
Steve and Jonathan: For being cool on the dock and
giving us the skinny on poisonous water snakes.
HujaBoy - For laughing and joking around with us when
we parked illegally at the hotel - and, of course, for
playing some great music!
He who is responsible for bringing Hujaboy here:
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!
Matt and (I never got your name) (aka Chameleon and
Labyrinth) - For the afternoon DEPTH on Saturday...
It was DEEP and very very appreciated from a hammock
on top of the hill...
Kilowatt: Only four people may have heard the set -
but it was simply brilliant! (so I hear).
The VJ who was playing at 8:30PM on Saturday Night: I
was watching the old 1960's video of the inside of a
machine shop. The guys were measuring cylinder
castings and running shafts through "go/no-go"
calipers. I was hoping there was some audio too... A
TOTAL collision of worlds for me -- and one that I
welcomed!
Mark and Tammy - For coming out and giving a 4WD
driving show on your way out!! Brilliant!!
WitchDokta - You're the man!!!
Dan Covan - For being wise... and for the great music
you and Dean made and performed. And, of course, for
the story about that Indian musician who made little
kids cover his ears! Serena is right, your name should
have an ! after it!
Merry - For being there!!! HELL YES!!!!
Scott - For picking up the trash afetr the party and
being the "go-to" guy with authority!
The guys whose Hammock we borrowed on Saturday around
noon: THANK YOU - and MANY MANY apologies to the guy
whose hammock we borrowed who came by and needed to
crash in it...
Lester (my bulldog puppy I was supposed to get when I
was down there) - MANY apologies, Lester, but Marria
was too worried about having to get you all the way
back to Boston. Seeing as rampant inbreeding has made
you somehow related to every English Bulldog puppy
born world-wide, I'll just have to give your name to
your distant brother when I adopt him sometime in the
next couple months...
And for anyone and everyone I may have forgotten - and
there are many as its 1:00AM and I do have work in 5
hours...
THANKS TO EVERYONE!! It was one hell of a party!
"
utmost thanks dave for that awesome review.... it really tells a great story and expresses the great experience we all shared...

My first multi-day trance event, and I must say, it was absolutely A+ fucking awesome! Kameleon and Labyrinth's nighttime progressive set at the downtempo stage was the highlight for me. That and LOOPUS!
as a side note, I met a fellow out there named Eric (Erick? Erik?) who was from Framingham, Ma, maybe like a mile from my place in Sherborn. And, like a spunion, I failed to get his phone number!! Eric, if you're reading this , please PM! I'd love to have some local trance friends. Similarly, if any of you know who I'm talking about, tell him to get in touch, or PM me or something!
Much love to all of you. See you at the next Party! |
