K.U.R.O. - Satisfaction

Psyristor Trax 2004

1 - Bush Beat
2 - Dervish Wind
3 - Anion
4 - Self Control
5 - Blast
6 - Frozen Bug
7 - Next Wave
8 - Lifeforce
9 - The Man Who Fell To Earth

My first introduction to K.U.R.O.'s first album in many years was at a live set he performed recently. While being very techy overall, I was very much impressed by the density of the sound and how powerful the tracks were. So needless to say I was rather interested to see how the tracks would hold up on the much smaller venue of the home stereo system.

Bush Beat starts us off with a tech-ish bassline I can only describe as bubbling. Layer start to build up quickly ranging from random noises to errie pads. While I am generally choosey about my tech/minimal psy, I must say I am liking this. Dervish Wind comes in next hard dark and fast. This reminds me a bit of some Praecox material, but much denser.

Anion jumps right in with another tough kick and some more low bubbling bass. This track focuses a lot on dirty tech-ish beats and loops and not some much on atmosphere. Not a bad thing and it fits into the flow of the album so far. This sort of track is something I definately have to be in the mood for, but at the moment I am in the mood for it, so no complaints. Self Control is next and starts off a bit slow for the home listener. After the Anion pure techno work out, it is a nice jump back into the more atmospheric tech side of things. Some of the dirty loops here remind me of The Delta's last album which, depending on my mood, is a good album. Some of it works quite well, while other bits don't grab me. Not a bad track by any means though.

By Blast, the general vibe of the album is clear. Lots of dirty techy loops over low bubbling bass with lots of atmospheric stuff floating all over the place in an almost meditative way. I like it. Frozen Bug gives us a bit of a surprise. While still fitting the vibe of the album, this track is much more active and pumping. Indeed you good probably get away with dropping this in a full on set if you are a decent dj.

Next Wave brings us back to serious tech-land with another deep thumping track. Like Anion it starts out very tech-ish (you get the idea by now), but part way in some slow creeping, yet massively dense melodic action sneaks its way in. Lifeforce connects to Next Wave with a nice filtered transition. Here again we have a lot of percussive, often dirty loops, mixed in with hints of tribal work. Again, nice stuff when I am in a tech mood.

The Man Who Fell To Earth finishes off the album in an unexpected way. Featuring some "butt rock" "ALL RIGHT" vocal samples and more choppy guitar samples, this track seems a bit tongue in cheek, mixing the psy-tech elements of the rest of the album with some pure cheese. Personally the cheese doesn't do it for me, even though I can appreciate the track.

The end result - This is an album that strongly depends on my mood. However, when I am in a minimal, psy-tech mood, this is definately one of the CDs I will be reaching for. Purist fans of goa or full on probably won't find much to like here, but for people while wider tastes, this album can fill your psy-tech urges quite nicely. 7.5/10           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

I just received it today!
BIG ONE!

What I Loooooove with K.U.R.O. and generally with psyristor stable is that they keep you head locked focused on the tension of the tracks while your body shake fitting with the stomping beats.........
Like an intense travel letting you putting pictures on the sounds...
And something very important imo: He creates a real space sensation like you are in the center of an industrial complex, with cinematic atmospheres....

People might say that's too much minimal and repetitive...What I can answer is that this music is made for a second level of listening....You come inside the real materiality of sounds....You can feel its texture.

YES!

YES!

MORE STUFF LIKE THIS PLEASE!

Awesome yet original soundwork, clever and potent structures in all of the music. A very mature and well thought out album with a load of character and creative punchlines to the tracks which have a flow to them that just works so friggin' well. On the top layer this album may sound less energetic than most full-on releases, but it makes up for it with gritty tooth-grinding atmospheres, a load of depth and some nice techy influences which just add so much to everyone who listens beyond the last breakdown. This one is one of the ones that can only grow on you more and more, not less.

I too have the Destructive Inspection Phase 1 comp.

I listened to the sound samples of Satisfaction about 2 weeks ago on psyshop, and I love it. Bring on the Psytekk. I'll be ordering it by the end of this week.

Not only do I spin psytrance, but I also spin Techno, so that's why I can appreciate this particular sound so much.

Jikkenteki, loved your avaliation. Nice perception, yours. Really. But as a goa-trancer and Kuro's number one fan, I ask your permission to make my own review. Funny thing, I was teased by your comment that goa fans would expect for more, when I feel quite the contrary. Kuro still has that Goan thing on him.

Well, my general comment is that "satisfaction" has a element common to all the tracks: it sounds acid, indeed very acid tranced. And there's another point: you've got to have a powerful bass-booster to feel the textures of the tracks

1.Bush Beat, like almost all the rest of the album has a exquisite bassline, and Kuro works with minimal elements echoes and effects in a techno way.

2.Tech-trancey track, but it sounds a little too dark to his fans. But I guess this track is more directed to his techno fans. Reminding us all that Tokyo has a very strong techno scene.

3. Anion, is another step in the techno path. It lightly reminds@me of a Spiriallianzs tracks "the ghost brigade" I think. Again Kuro bows his head to the techno scene. But all the while tracks 2 and 3 has that trancey element that links both scenes.

4.Self Control - is a minimal track, with subtle atmosphere under a faint drumkick. Can anyone tell me if it's my imagination, or is there a TB 303 hidden somewhere in the track?

5.Blast - the best track of this album, in my oppinion. The bassline is a monster - very aceed. The textures working as a energy-gun to your body and brain. I've listened to it in open air. And let me tell you, it sends you floating there out in space.

6.Another acid blast from Kuro, this track is perfect to the mega-clubs in Japan. If you've been here, you know what I'm talking about: incenses, tie-dye outfits, smiles in yer face and all the stuff. Track number 2 in the album, to me.

7.Again Kuro gest caught in techno land. This tracks sounds a little industrial to the trance ear. But I think Kuro is trying to experience other sounds beyond his trademark, which is tracks 5,6 and 8.

8.Somehow this track reminds me of samba, I guess it's because of its swinging element. Make you feel like shaking your butt, LOL. "Lifeforce" has a housey element@to it, you may feel in the texture. To the foreigner the "yasashii" mantra means "cool" in japanese.

9.This is a strange track, the only one with guitars in the album. But even so, it has a very poweful swinging element, and it played in a poweful sound system will work well. Not my favorite, sounding a little full-on to my ears.

Well, this is my oppinion. And again I say that this album work better in a system with a bass-booster, listen and you will see why. I think it's the way it was recorded, aimed to huge clubs and outdoor events.

Peace and Love.

goa-ganges -

I was saying that "purist" goa fans might not find much to like here, while more open minded ones very well might find something to like. Your comments about having a bass intensive system to hear the album properly are absolutely correct though. The tracks here were excellent live on a big pumping system, hence I was a little cold on all the stuff lost listening at home. That said this album definately has been growning on me more and more the last few weeks, which is always the sign of a good album in my opinion.           New Album: Jikkenteki - Flights Of Infinity

This album has really grown into me. Fantastic stuff and it is my first tech trance album. I bought it after hearing how impressive "Destruction Inpection Phase 1" compil sounded at saikosounds (i know its gona sound better when i get the cd, buts its always out of stock!). Anyway, i dont know how to describe as well as ganges-chan and Jikken-chan but man this album is the bOmB! I loved track 3 the most, it has such a nice build up and stomps your heart out, its a dance floor killer imho. Other tracks which i liked as well are 4,5,8, and 9 (i think its quite experimental this one, guitars on tech? correct me if i am wrong). I just need to open up myself to appreciate the other tracks which i could not yet Well i like full-on but hey after listening to this, i find it so refreshing. I am waiting for JP Noir compil by BPF right now to see whats up. Is this the underground sound of Japan? [techtrance]? Its just awesome! I hope to hear more works of mr Takeichirou in future! This has definitely been a fantastic album! Btw the cover art is pretty cool too, looks vampiric but man the CD is ugly orange? lol

Hi Jikken, you were right about Kuro not being so acid as he's been before. And to tell you the truth, I wished all the tracks were like "blast", which is pure Kuro sound. But anyway I loved his CD, and a good thermomether to his talent is that my friends found it out-of-stock in Tower, Cisco and Groove stores. Chobo-chan, if you're in Japan, Kuro will play live at Planetary Nation 2004, take a look at the japanese section. And I will tell you, Kuro is one of those artists who really knows the deeper meaning of "trance".

Peace and Love

I just got this CD the other day and I simply LOVE it!! I'll be spinning these tracks in both my psytrance and techno sets. A must buy for people who like their music dark and hard!!

My favorites are 1, 3, 5 and 6. My least favorites are 4 and 9.

The first half of track 4 is the bomb diggity, but then a certain sound comes in and it ruins the track for me.

As for track 9, I sometimes like tracks with guitars in them, but this one just doesn't do much for me.

I rank this CD a 9/10.
