This has turned into one of these ”Dark psy vs. Morning full on” threads once again, and frankly I think it’s pointless to discuss which style requires most “skills” to produce, since it all comes down to taste.

I consider it true that a lot of full on acts follow the same formula though (and have been for a few years), but I don’t agree that every dark psy act have their own distinct sound, and that they are bringing something new in each track (to quite Lithium). Every since dark psy started to hit big, a lot of new acts have emerged, and I don’t see them copying their idols any less than the many new Israeli acts copying Astrix.

I’m not complaining though – if something gets popular, it will be copied. And that’s not at all exclusive for psytrance.

a formula only works if he has feedback from the public.and lithium has mencioned a good point of view that is: artists from a label works almoust in the same base.and is not true that every "dark"act sounds different.but i guess that people is not worried if he sounds different or if its original because when i look to the party review seccion few persons refer that fact.they only say killlllllllleeeeeeeeeerrrrrrr.
i found a very good dark compilation v/a mechanic castle.i have seen in boom the live of hyperfrequencies.vs.crazy lions and it was execelent.but its true also that dark music makes many twisted faces on the dance floor.

many people make "darkpsychedelic" stuff because u don't need musical knowledge in order to create it....
it's a new trend 'cause many people now can make trance with just a computer and some speakers

it's easy and fast to make, u don't need to take care of the harmonies because there are none
indeed u can say it's unpredictable because most of the time it has totally no rythmic structure, it's just random atonal noises on a kick bass

but for sure there are some exceptions and some people know how to make it good... but it's a really small number compared to the bunch of shit that is being released these days
IMHO

No man,
as is said previuosly, both night & morning music can be good it depends on may things (just read my previous post).

I'm sorry but I totally disagree when you say dark is easier to make than morning music.

Wasn't Infected mushroom's old style dark enough?
Was it good?
off course it was!
Was there good music in it?
Off course there was!

It's all about quality mate.
There aren't styles which are easier than others to produce.

I'm not getting into a Dark vs Morning scenario...

...but it seems to me that since the Dark artists have such a strong and secure fan following, a lot of them have stopped trying. Very monotonous stuff being pumped out these days, unlike morning artists, who have to be innovative every time to get any kind of +ve response.

Really hope there are some groundbreaking albums on their way, cos 2005 hasnt seen one yet.

My bets on a US act Bodhisattva 13:20

very fresh twisted evil sound...

No no.
People like day, people like dark.
I like dark just a bit more. I like to keep my 'tripping balls' face anonymous at night. Lol
Serious trancing at night, community feeling in the day.

Hi there !

I think that if you find a good balance betweeen funky happy squeezing leads n' grooves and a harder (darker) way expressing atmospheres n' rythmes you can almost reach anyone out there:)!!! light and dark feelings hold there hands together to feed any brain if you avoid the stereotypes like tralalalala and the sucidal no future minimal noise in your face ...
keep pushing and search for the unexpectable ...put the arpeggiators to trash !

Boom Boom ))))))))

sub genres within psytrance come and go in waves...full on has peaked now and the dark side is rising. It's a natural phenomenon....when something starts to take hold more people produce it, more people listen to it and it gets bigger, but eventually it runs out of steam and something else comes along, maybe something new but more likely something recycled (like neo fullon). full on has been like that for ages now...gms hasnt changed their style much in 7 or 8 years...(they just upgraded the production) but that style has been peaking and troughing several times since then. Dark has been around for a long time, Xenomorph Cassandra's Nightmare and The Delta Schizoeffective spring to mind, and it's about time it had it's day...bring on some more I say

Something I really miss in melodic music nowadays is a lack of originality and variation, and something I miss in hard music is an uplifting obscure and different melody.

I do like music which has plenty of energy, an original composition and this sense of spiritual journey... Not religious, but music that helps you implode within oneself abstracting our mind into a trance like state.

I do feel nowadays, and this can be applied to almost all trance, music has become enginnering centered. I just do not like to go about the past, since it is gone and we are in a different point in time, but b4 all the tracks I played were very different from each other in sound, texture, composition, synthesis... Now all music has become homogeneous.

What ppl call dark, has always existed. I mean in 1996 or 97 it was Semsis and a few more I should remember if I was in my record library. Tripiatrik, COP, FAT... I mean there was music which had complete different structures and sounds... but remained so powerful. It is tough to make a story witht he released music, because it all sounds very similar.

I have a feeling everytime I get a new order, we have been conditioned to re-live the same experience that marked our lives in different first times we encountered this movement. The way we make the music, the way we decorate the dancefloors. Sometimes, I feel we have narrowed it into a one directional and dimendional experience, where the only novelty is just a track or deco we have not experience yet. It is like we build this box around us of all the stuff we love and have shrink it in the constant pursuit of perfection within that particular experience. And do not get me wrong, I personally enjoy every bit of it. However I miss to step into an event, which breaks all the rules and makes it work better than what we have. And I think this is what is happening with all these new artists from labels like Trishula, Alkaloid, MOE, Parvati... they are reacting against an imposed norm and are slowly trying to reach beyong the box in a constant search for originality. So if the norm is arpegios, they are going to chop those melodies and react against arpeggio based melodies... because the way these tracks have been composed since 1995, have saturated our brains and are not inspiring anymore. It is a moment to redefine everything and to take it beyond the reach of anything we can imagine. I think part of the answer is to make it super psychedelic, but the other part lies outside our movement and beyong our experience.

I mean when we take psychedelics we are ready to expect the unexpected.

Well said Offtenwhatever,
I like your post and agree with it.
What I miss is to define a party/festival as a psychedelic adventure & a spiritual journey.
Unfortunately we are loosing that nowadays.

I just hope that many artsits including the new ones offcourse open their mind and remember what the true meaning of psychedlic is.

And a message to the new artists would be:
"Do not start producing music b4 you first listen to the old times psychedelic trance".

Not to copy it or make similar music but simply to get a feeling of what a trance party used to taste like.

Go even back to 1994 if possible.I'm sure you'll learn something form there.
My favourtite period in trance was in 1999 & 2000.

Let's make this dream a reality boys & girls.

P.S:
What kind of nick is that?
