I just got introduced to the japanese side of ambient/downtempo and I must say its got a brilliantly unique sound to it. Something like IDM meets chillout. The only artists I've been able to dig up are

Sushi Club
Oto-graph
Rei Harakami

Was wondering if there were any others? Most of them are disconnected from the mainstream acts so its hard to find them on the regular online recordshops.

Audio Active are extremely diverse in sound, so much of their material won't be what you want-they run the gamut from true beatless ambient to dub, techno, rock, etc. Try the album Melt1 and the first track from Return of the Red Eye for the ambient stuff, although I love them in general.

Asa Chang and Junray-prioritize checking out the track Hana, it's one of my all time faves of any musical genre. As I understand it, Junray is fictional and Asa Chang is an accomplished tabla player, j-pop producer, and former member of the Tokyo Ska Paradise orchestra. nuf said. Some of the most sophisticated, interesting stuff I've found.

Hope you enjoy either of those!

Thanks for the recs pete, I listened to some of the Audio Active samples on Amazon. Totally digging it.

Asa Chang and Junray were interesting. Very dissociated sound. I like the eastern influence. They sound like classical Indian raaga one second and twisted electronic the next.

I'll probably pick up RedI... but I cant seem to find Melt1.

There is a band making reggae-dub with a female singer, and they make also instrumental tracks.. There are some really nice ones !

Dry & Heavy

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for but i've played a few of their instrumentals already and it worked not bad ^^           .

I think Supercozi (Gus Till's wife) is japanese. I have only just heard the samples from her album and it certainly is not a sound I have heard before........but I like it

Dry and Heavy is actually a side project of Audio Active -great stuff in a more traditional reggae dub vein. They both do a version of Kick the Bong around, a very great song...my favorite version is the Adrian Sherwood mix from the Audio Active Bong ep.

I really recommend Kenji Kawai. He's composed amazing soundtracks for Japanese animes and movies like Ghost in the Shell, Dark Water and Avalon.
