The Dervishes now come from Syria i think. I went to a qawali and sufi music thing a year ago and they had the swirling dervishes up. now that is some seriouslly psychotic stuff. i think they twirl and twirl and eventually go into a trance.
sufi music has psychadelic over tones for shoo, its the instruments but also the beats and the lyrics, theyre all so prolific. even now you will see at thursday sufi nights or whenever people so into the music that they really go into a trance. its a really strange thing to watch.
@ KC you got your history right, really. like i said somewhere, read Muhammad by Karen Armstrong or any book of hers you can find

The Darkness, it lies waiting. Dormant but ever ready...to envelope us all. Embrace it or denounce it, one must pick a path. |

Few hunderts of years ago there was a movement called "Dervish" or "Dervism" in Turkey, and it was very simmilar in conception with the modern psychedelic movement. You can say it was an ancient form of psychedelic culture. Too bad that it was lost in time.
Maybe it must be bringt back. We can learn a lot of thing from it.
Sorry for my english !
