well i had this situation for example, i make parties here in Argentina and I have booked several artists, some of them i liked some of then i didnt like but i knew people would like them.

i was talking to bring artist X from a X label, and this person saw a post where i said that i didnt like at all a X release from this X label, and they suddenly started bitching about it in my msn. of course trying to book any artist from that label is impossible now.

forums are good for connecting people, but these kind of shit goes on forever. so basically i just use these forum for information and contacts, but posting my personal opinion has proved not only futile (endless discussions of the same topics forever) but also harmful to what im trying to do in my country.

so i think there a lot of shit here, im glad that not everyone around here has something to do with the political background that not all the public sees, but well dont think that it does not affect everything that goes on here, specially opinions about releases.           Psychedelic Trance from Argentina

I dont see many negative reviews, if any?, no matter how good the above mentioned reviwer's are. Not really any balanced reviews here at all. That's a problem in my opinion but of course that's also what distinguish the professional reviewer's (hint: people that are paid to review music for the written press ect.) from amature reviwer's

same here

and btw around 80% of the reviews on isratrance get rated over 7/10...if I trusted the reviews here then around 80% of the music on this scene would kick ass and clearly it does not...the reviews are always written by people who get promos from labels and labels only want to read good reviews...did you reviewers ever wonder how a label would react if they sent you promos and you wrote that they suck...try it...I found out one time and it was down right pathetic

I have may times told labels that their promo was no good. Some of them I never heard from again. Some actually appriciated my opinion.

Well for being a reviewer that receives promos, I usually let the labels know in advance that I don't promise a positive review, or any review at all for that matter.
And yes, I stopped getting promos for writing bad reviews or not writing them. Understandable, I wouldn't like to send any promo material to a guy that would damage the sales

Of course it’s only up to yourself if you like a release, but combined with samples, reviews can sometimes be a good pointer for buying new stuff. If it hadn’t been for the review-section I would for instance never have discovered amazing albums from artists like Abakus and BLT & Danni Makov – but on the other hand, I got carried away by the hype of the album from The Misted Muppet. I think I’m the only one who didn’t like that one

I think you’re overreacting about the promo-deals by the way Dovla. I can only speak for myself, but I think it’s less than 25% of the in-depth reviews I’ve written, I have actually received as promos from the artists/labels. Am I the only one not receiving tons of CD’s from various labels?

Concerning the high grades; again I can only speak for myself, but I do this for fun, and it’s not really that fun to write an extensive review of something you don’t like. I don’t hold myself back on commenting releases, when someone else has written a review though.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

One of the reasons for the high grades is that people usually comment only what they like.
If no one comments about what they don't like it usually results in no good grades. Just get to know the reviewers and find someone with the same taste like you.

I learned this as well... talk about un-professional! I simply told the label I didn't like the release and that I'd write a full review if they wanted but it wouldn't be positive. I even told them before they sent the promo that I probably wouldn't like it so don't bother. And then to get a haughty response when I confirm my dislike... bah. It seems like its too much of a complicated issue for most labels to understand - reviews are worthless if the reviewer is giving everything a soft treatment. Not every release is good. If you want only good reviews then only send promos of good albums! Some promos I've recieved have been inexcusably bad.

Anyway for some reason or another I get no promos any more. Maybe I've made it clear that I am no label's lap dog. A free CD does not a good review equal!

Re: bad reviews... I don't like to post these because of the trouble that can get caused (personal attacks, etc) - bad reviews are taboo here. I do write them - I just don't post them. In fact I have many reviews I don't bother posting anywhere - right now I'm not sure what to do with them. If I see a release underappreciated in the CD reviews forum sometimes I'll drop mine in but aside from that, they wait in the shadows.

hmm...look at it this way...if no one writes a bad review every once in a while then some really bad music can get sold a lot better...every label has some bad releases sometimes and for instance if twisted released a really bad compilation and someone is interested in buying it opens isratrance and doesn't find any bad reviews he will open up some other review from twisted and find out that all the other cds are great and maybe buy this bad one...at least that's how I see it...labels have a certain reputation and if we don't tarnish it every once in a while then people will think that some labels can't make mistake and that's far from the truth...of course no one likes to write bad reviews, myself included...but still I think we need to say when something is really bad just to put the labels in their place           DJ Dovla | Interchill Records, Flow Records

I don't write any reviews unless I really, really like the release and it hasn't been reviewed yet. Only two albums I've thought were good enough to spend a good amount of time reviewing this year were Abakus's and Kaya Project.

Dovla I think part of the issue is just that though... is a person arrogant enough to want to put out a bad review knowing that, regardless that it may just be subjective opinion, it will hurt the label's sales? It may depend on who we're looking out for - ourselves (gimme promos for copycat positive reviews), fellow listeners (hey guys avoid this one), the artists (praise + constructive feedback), the labels (never a bad review, everything is killah!), or the scene as a whole (good luck balancing all elements)... I think most people will agree that the noble path is to inform fellow listeners most of all, and to some extent that may require ignoring the interests of artists/labels.
