Hi all, I'm currently writing (hate the word producing) with free or very low cost software. My daw is Reaper, I've paid for Alien 303 and Dubmaster, Tx16W and a couple of others. All my other Vst's are freeware.
I keep reading on this forum of plugins and then go look at the price. Some run in to the hundreds. Is 1 piece of software really worth that much? Is it not possible to create without spending that sort of money?
If that's really the case should I give up now cause buying Reaper was a sacrifice? I just want to be able to put something out there for people to like, not looking to make money, but I don't want to get slated by the community cause sound quality ain't what it could be.
Any examples of tracks written on free or dirt cheap software would go a long way to easing my mind. Looked on the forum but any links are dead.
Thanks guys

Its possible to reach a good sound, sometimes mixed up/mistaken with "high-end", only with "onboeard-tools" and "freeware".
The way there might be a few steps longer than with tools, which were "born" for a special "range/area" with a great sound.
Of course it is worth it to buy the one (or the other) "good synth" or "good effect-tool",
but do not get lost in the "crowded market", test the demo-version first to make a decision, whats "really" needed and useable.
It takes some time to have all (and only) needed "tools of the digital-studio"...
Go with Reaper as long you find it useable 4U, your VST(i)'s will move with you to most other DAWS...
Reaper : http://tutorials.boyinaband.com/category/7-day-song/psytrance-tutorial
As often told, here in this forum and elsewhere, every tool should be known, some (or the) "tricks" should be known
and experience is needed to reach the "wanted sound"...
And of course, equal which tools and knowledge, the creativity is a significate feature on the way...
Dont look - maybe only listen - too much to the league of the "good sound"-, "beautiful sound"- or "high-end"- masters,
they allready move the movement of the tribe into ecstasy...
Also "new" music-writer and their "new" music is needed, cause the tribe likes variations...
So... Do what you love...
Wishing you well... |

there is software which indeed costs its money. when you work professionally in the sound production industry $200-300 for a plugin you will use forever is not a big price at all. things like cubase or pro tools will feed your family for a long time, it is like a racing car for a racer. of course you an try racing with regular car too and if you are talented you may win
of course if you do psytrance for yourself it is a different story - it is hard to be constantly investing with very little or none money paying back.
having said that it is amazing there is really cool free soft that people use in pro work, like Baxter EQ which I use in commercial projects for several years already and so on

When you see some things in a view of value for money some plugins worth every single cent that you will pay.
For example NI KOMPLETE. Think what you will get...500 euro but you will have too much tools to work in quality mode.
The best way is to buy things depends on your needs...even this is software of hardware.
In the other side ofcourse you can find quality free products. I use many of them and i'm really happy.

You can achieve good results with free plugins if you know how to use them and properly mix your music, there are really good free stuff out there, the question is do you have decent monitoring situation and knowledge to pull out good outcome.
I heard some music made with freebies entirely, but it's not fair comparison because it's made on almost free speakers, by newcomer, it's not mixed properly or it's old school kinda of deal and so on, so how can you compare that to something that is made by someone who have good knowledge, monitoring situation and modern production sound.

some of the best plugin ever are free , it s not for quality that you pay but for using some tool that don t come for free.
price have nothing to do with quality as it depend lot of factor..like buisness model the company use..
some good free or low cost plugs:
Tdr feedback compressor
klanghelm compressors
uhe free stuff
Ni free stuff
Valhalla stuff
Tal audio
Variety of sound
ddmf
vladgsound
and there is a lot more but it s the first coming to my mind..all these things are top notch and for some as good as it get in software, some beat even high priced plugs..
for daw you can use reaper for free if i m right?there is just a nag screen coming once demo end so you could start like this but it s not the easiest daw to start with imo |

Not free, but it's cheap.
"
We offer two licenses, depending on how you use REAPER.
$225: full commercial license.
$60: discounted license. "
I think it's totally possible to make very good music not spending a lot of money. Except perhaps on good monitoring and a good sound card, some midi controller... Agree there's great sounding free stuff!

pricey software is not needed, but may take you longer distances in shorter time and less hassle.
and: its fucking fun.

Thanks for the replies all. Have been using a licensed version of Reaper for a couple of years to record audio so I kinda know my way around it. Love the fact it's so customisable. I've also bought all the Geoffrey Francis books to go with. Reamix:Breaking the Barriers is a mine of mixing information, well worth getting.
As for monitoring and soundcards. I can only use headphones (Shure SRH440s) where I live, my landlady has banned anyone from having speakers in their room!! My soundcard is built into the MAudio Prokeys keyboard and I have an Akai LPD8 controller.
As you can see, a budget setup. I've tried warez software but I kept suffering blue screen crashes, and morally I couldn't make anything public knowing it was made with stolen software. Having reinstalled windows and only legal softs has at least got rid of the crashes.
I guess, as Xsze said, it's all about knowing how to use what you've got to get the best results.
