Domo Records continue their strong showing in 2005 with the release of Insane Creation’s new album “Connected”. The Swiss act has been an integral part of the Domo roster for a long time, with his deep, percussive grooves and innovative production and musicality. Certainly an artist that has helped define the sound of the label, this release is without a doubt one of the best artist albums to be released this year.

The sound has definitely been updated- its pumpy, windy psy-prog with heaps of tribally percussions and atmospheres- those who are fans of the Aussie guys like Shadow FX, Sensient and Sun Control Species I dare say will get into this… It’s perhaps a little less minimal than those guys, but it’s clear to see they come from the same school. The new Insane Creation sound is crispy and clear, with ultra-fat bass and tidy as fuck production skills- somehow the phrase “repetitive randomness” seems to come to mind when I listen to this release…

Album opens with “Distorted Dreams”- a tasty slower tribally number. Those people who liked the old sound of genetic spin will get into this one I think. A light kind of groove that will do for late in the daytime methinks. Next up is “Restlessness”- and a sexy number it is. Deep as fuck bass, and lovely slinky leads and rhythms- for some reason I understand why this track is called what it is- brings images of a restless state to my mind.

Continuing the compilation is “Filestyle”- one of the more jumpity numbers on the album for sure. Positive and groovy, with voice samples- by this stage you should be getting a very good idea of the IC trademark sound. It’s not too similar- yet it carries a nice consistent groove throughout the album- you can definitely hear his sound, that’s for sure. “Sweet Random” picks up the pace a little, a little darker and more brooding- some tekky kind of influences as well… Bit more morning sounding than the first couple of tracks I think, its getting a bit faster in BPMs too… Some trancish melodies at the end, but don’t go too far- which I think is nice. Keeps the psy-vibe without getting all airy-fairy on us.

“Snuul” is up next, and I’d say it’s a tie for my favourite one on the album. A deeper more tribal groove, could fit it successfully into a proggy-house style set I think- but it’s still got that trancy feel too- don’t think this is a house tune by any means. Deep and sexy, I can see dance floors bumping and grinding to this one- one for the later hours for sure. MMmmmmmmmmmm deep. “Cafane” vs new artist Cafu would be the one it is tied with- tidy as fuuuuck this tune is. Love the percussion in this one- stabby, intelligent and keeps you guessing all the way through. Can hear the sound of the new comer Cafu- really loved his stuff on Future Construx and his other unreleased tunes are very tidy as well… wow.

“Freakuencer” picks the pace up a bit, with its thumping 138 bpm pushing it back into morning territory. Pumpy and upbeat- reminds me a little of the IC track on VA-Posse (it’s been getting a thrashing by me that one, so this isn’t a bad thing!!!). Groovy. Closing the compilation is “Shoobidoo”, probably the most jumpy track on the album. Solid and funky at the same time, love the melodies in this one. Keep you guessing the whole way. Great end to a fantastic cd- don’t usually hear albums finish on the most powerful tracks, it’s cool.

Overall, Insane Creation have delivered one of the best artist albums on 2005- Tidy production, neat, consistent sound (that doesn’t get too samey at the same time) and heaps of nice original ideas and sounds. A real tribally affair, this will please fans of older and new trance alike, with influences from both the smoother more contemporary style of progressive and the minimal of old. It’s easy to see why so many people sight Insane Creation as a major influence- truly one of the most innovative progressive acts around today. Great release Insane Creation and Domo- the progressive scene certainly can’t complain about lack of quality release right now.

Favourite tracks: 2,3,5,6

Overall 8/10

Review:

One of Switzerlands most well-known progressive artists is Dave Walitza, better known as Insane Creation. Over the years his tracks has been released by labels like Plusquam, Traktor Schallabor, Interzone and Starsound, but DOMO has really been the most important label in promoting his sound, featuring him on all their compilations released so far. On that account, it wasn't surprising when DOMO announced the release of his debut album earlier this year - and now it has finally been released.

01. Distorted Dreams [136 BPM]
"Distorted Dreams" kicks off the album, but doesn't leave a big impression. The 30-second intro is ok, but too short and simple, and doesn't really build up energy for the entry of the kick and bassline. The track itself rolls along nicely with a plain, mellow groove embellished by more or less subtle effects and reverbed percussion, but overall it seems to lack "something" - it's just too empty for my liking.

02. Restlessness [136 BPM (mistakenly written as 135 BPM on the cover)]
Things improve a bit with "Restlessness", relying on a more pumping kick and bassline combination, giving the track some more punch than the opener. The sound-theme is a bit more polished, and in some ways reminds me of older stuff by Buzz/Buzzmonx. The subtle melodies also work quite well, and overall make this track feel much more complete than the opener.

03. Filestyle [135 BPM (mistakenly written as 136 BPM on the cover)]
"Filestyle" starts deeper than the previous tracks, with some delicious, heavily reverbed synth stabs setting the atmosphere. The groove is laidback and very hypnotic, some male voice-samples occasionally pop up, and a sweet, simple melody-line gives the track a slightly uplifting touch. Nice, smooth morning tune.

04. Sweet Random [134 BPM]
Things get a bit more energetic with "Sweet Random". It's more pumping track than the predecessor, with a slightly harsher and more technish sound and a groove for the daytime at the outdoor. The melodies does seem a bit too screamy for my taste though, and overall the track doesn't seem to really progress.

05. Snüül [134 BPM]
"I could say, that by using psychedelic drugs, I became tuned in on the network of neurological signals and cellular wisdoms that radiate at hundreds of millions per second within my body" - sounds familiar? The opening sample gives associations to "Mi-Loony-Um!", but "Snüül" is nowhere near Hallucinogens famous Y2K-tune. "Snüül" is still great though - relying on a laidback, house-like groove, embellished by a deep and quite gloomy atmosphere, this is a delicous and mellow tune - definitely one of my favourites.

06. Cafane [133 BPM]
On "Cafane" Insane Creation teams up with Christian Gafner, better known as Cafu, and the result stands out as one of the few distinct tunes on the album. Laidback, yet with a very rolling and dance friendly groove, some extremely tight percussion and some sweet, sexy sounds giving it a delicious and uplifting, yet slightly melancholic feel. Certainly among my favourites on the CD.

07. Freakuencer [138 BPM]
The tempo is raised with "Freakuencer", possibly the tune on the album most true to the older, more minimal Insane Creation sound. Not quite as dark as some of the older stuff though, with light-hearted stabs and tribal percussion giving the track a morning-oriented sound, but with a phat and attractive bassline below. Pretty nice, but pales in comparison with the previous tracks.

08. Shoobidoo [138 BPM]
Closing the album is "Shoobidoo", and it continues with the faster tempo from "Freakuence", but feels a bit more interesting. It has a funkier touch, a slightly gloomy melody popping up every once in a while, and generally some of the elements doesn't feel as straightforward and ordinary as the rest of the tracks. That being said, I didn't really connect to the track, and wouldn't rate it among the best here.

Bottom line:

After being in the game for some years, "Connected" proves to be a fine debut album for Insane Creation. The sound can best be described as a mix of the polished house-influenced progressive trance of today, and the rawer psychedelic minimal of yesterday. You won't find any easy digestible trancy melodies or riffs here though, and while the subtleness for most part is a strong point about the album, I must say I miss some material that really stands out.

"Connected" of course has its moments, but even though it's a good, tightly produced album with a very enjoyable sound, it never really reaches the same quality of some of the biggest progressive albums from 2005 like Jaïa or Antix.

... Still, you could do a lot worse than buying this release. I can surely recommend it, but won't classify it as an essential buy.

Favourites:

2, 3, 5 (!), 6

Verdict:

7/10

Insane Creation (Dave Walitza) is a progressive trance artist from Switzerland, who has previously released 12 inches on Plusquam and Traktor Schalllabor, plus many different compilations. Now he is finally out with his debut album on Domo Records.

Insane Creation "Connected" Domo Records 2005 (DOMOCD007)

1. Distorted Dreams
2. Restlessness
3. Filestyle
4. Sweet Random
5. Snüül
6. Cafone
7. Freakuencer
8. Shoobidoo

This album was a very nice, positive surprise for me. With all the repetive full on trance being released these days, it is really nice to get a progressive album like this, which fits nice for homelistening as well as on the dance floor. This guy sure serves some crunchy tracks here. Jumpy, fresh, crispy sounds and beats all the way in every track. Not so melodic, still a lot of variation of sounds and beats. A very pleasant listening experience on a good sound system or in your headphones. Personally, I haven’t heard many tracks by this guy before, so I was very positive surprised. Groovy vibes that will for sure make some good vibes on progressive dancefloors worldwide in the early evening or outdoor in the sun.

This album is the absolute best release from Domo Records so far. I have found some of the Domo releases slightly unchallenging, but this sounds really fresh and crispy! Recommended for those of you who like it progressive.
