i think you have to put it into perspective when IDM came about.
Think back to 1992-1993 to mainstream electronica. IDM is pretty intelligent compared to the crap from that time. My fav way to think about IDM is from when a guy first sent me an autechre mp3 before i had ever listened to them before.
