for full on: attck 20ms, release 100ms, ratio 4:1, threshold -17
for proggi: attack 10ms, release 200ms, ratio 3:1, threshold -10

(this is a joke)

there are no ideal settings, its all depends on the sound your trying to compress.
but if you really need to see some numbers read the "domestic flaming dart bass" post, he gave some numbers there.

why would it be a joke?! am i missing something, or u bieng uptight with "normal" information the only reason i ask is because i dont usually use compressors, only sidechain, but compressors on indervidual channels ie kick and bass. somthing tells me i need to compress my bassline to bring it forward in the mix!

so my question iz... ideal settings that people use

There are no universal settings for comps and eqs. I can't really stand these questions - ruining a good talk and forum. If you'd read a single book about mixing or just watch couple tutorials you could know use these.

for fast (semi)melodic bass:
-long attack time (protects transients)
-short release (boost low volume notes)
-threshold (export track to pool and check it's RMS, PEAK etc.. listen and try different settings)
-ratio ( try different settings between 2-8)

almost all the time bass synths have pretty tight dynamics already, so it's hard to hear differences between not compressed or compressed signal. If you over compress you lose transients, sounds attack and you will be damned.

just get some books and learn

and don't fucking touch a multiband compressor this year!          ""

lets not work with exact numbers but listen

bass compressor should make it abit more punchy , that meens some attach should be applied.
i would go for very small compression on bass , just to make sure all notes are about the same volume and that it has little bit more 'steady' feel to it.

for multiband kick and bass i wouls compress the shit out of the sub part up to 60-80hz and boost it abit , then compress little the low mid to get rid of some dirt. not doing it usualy rather eq's and kicks never overlap with bass or sidechained (i use sidechain from kick to the sub eq of the bass) this should resolve the need for the multiband thingo.

i have some general problems with crossover points , i can hear the artifacts immidiatly

it was a joke cause we can't give you numbers for compressor settings, this is bullshit....
it all depends on the source....
also different compressors behave different....
for example 20ms of attack on the waves rcomp sound totally different to 20ms of attack on the sonalksis comp.... so numbers are not usefull....           http://soundcloud.com/seamoon

Pretty much

I just don't worry about them very much, usually only apply some very light compression to glue kick and bass together.

Never ever used a multiband...

jizy mate, don't mean to sound rude, but starting a thread asking for ideal compressor settings and saying compressors are bullshit, sounds like you spend no time listening and messing with the tools you already have at your disposal.
use your ears, play around with compressor settings so that you can understand what they do to the incoming signal, cause saying compressors are bullshit as a response to something you read on here, means that you havent got a clue about compressors.

parallel compression on drums .. only there
or on a snare maybe, try to avoid compression as much as you can on anything else

First year I produced music, I never even understood what the compressor was for

And compressor-tools are probably the plugins where presets are the least helpful. If you are using presets, then adjust the treshold, attack and release (then the only thing left is ratio and maybe knee, so again, presets arent really helpful..)

Just tweak those knobs and read those manuals           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

Another thing one should keep in mind when using compressors is the attack of the source sound.

No rules there, but in general - shorter source attack - shorter compressor's attack. (If you want to use the compressor not as a special effect, but more as technical tool for controlling level of the sound).           http://soundcloud.com/aedem
