I'm travelling to the US on 24 January 2005 as part of my studies. It'll be my first time there, and despite my experiences with travels in Europe and my life-long upbringing with American movies and TV-shows, I still have a few questions that I'd like to get sorted before I venture off...

First and foremost: Cheap accommodation in New York (3-5 days)
Before doing anything "serious" we (nine marketing economist students) are going to hang out in New York for about 3-5 days. For this purpose we need to find some relatively cheap accommodation – like a hotel, hostel or whatever. As long as it’s not too expensive, and we’d prefer to be close to the city… Is that even possible? Tips, links, experiences, etc. would be much obliged.
YMCA is pretty cheap isn’t it – but also pretty basic? I’ve seen some pretty lousy hostels when I lived in London – they were too cheap, so I hope to find something nicer.

Secondly: What tourist-traps should I check out – and what else should I check out?
Whilst in New York I’d personally like to do the old tourist-thing and see the sights… Ground Zero, Times Square, Empire State Building, Fifth Avenue, etc. Hopefully all the big ones shouldn’t take too long, and I should have time to check out something else… I hear that Manhattan south of 14th street is more interesting for exploring – the same with Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Can anyone confirm this? Any recommendation of interesting stuff I should check out? Any record shops that sell hard-to-find CDs? Any magical restaurants? (I believe it’s Restaurant Week 2005 while we’re there…) Other funny/interesting stuff I absolutely have to check out? Again, pointers, hints, tips and experiences are much obliged…

After New York, I’m off to Athens, Ohio where I’ll be staying throughout February. Anything worth checking out in and around Ohio? I hear the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland is pretty cool… How about the prison used for filming Shawshank Redemption – is that worth a visit? As you can tell, I’m pretty clueless… *sS* How is the psy-scene in and around Ohio – any parties around February next year?

Well, that’s it for now… I guess more questions will arise, but I don’t want to bore you with an endless post, so I’ll stop here…

Any help would be much appreciated… Thx in advance.

Manhattan is my favorite city that I've ever been to. There a a lot of hostiles there, you might be able to look online. Dont expect them to be too nice tho, Dont forget to check out central park and the museum of natural history. Especially the Hayden Planitaruim.           no sig

you should contact luke from goaheadproductions.com in cleveland ... he might be doing another party by then...

and if not asheville is only a 8 hour drive .... we have a couple parties planned for february including maybe an indoor camping party.... and our weekly parties should be going by then trance on thursday and chill on sundays... perhaps youd like to come play in the mountains?

i would also recommend the metropolitan museum of art on the north end of central park in nyc... they have a reduced/donation entrance night i think its thursdays.
i went in there last winter and spent 6 hours in awe.

Ohio is a pit of dispair. You will probably hate it. It's cold and there is nothing there. Cleveland isn't all that great either. Goahead is pretty much shut down for the winter as well. Did I mention it's cold?

There is a pretty nice hostel on Amsterdam and 103rd where my friends have stayed before. It seems like a nice enough place and it's only like $35 a night per person. Hope you enjoy your trip!

Hey guys - thx alot for the info... I'll make sure to check out your recommendations...

VertiGOA => Thx for the tip, I'll definitely check that out... I was hoping to get more recommendations for the Hayden planetarium, and you did just that... ;o)

Bluespectralmonkey => Met. museum check! Thx - also noted... And thx for the tip on goaheadproductions - I had no idea about that... DeathPosture LIVE in Asheville for the first time... Hehe... I'm not sure you guys want to hear me spin - it's been more than a year since my last public apperance - and I spun indie-rock for 4 hours... Hehe... No, but seriously... I could be fun checking out a party in the mountains. I hope to find time in my schedule, and I'll get in touch if it works out... ;o)

Doku => Sorry to hear that Ohio sucks that much... I kinda knew that already, as we had 10 American students from Athens, OH visit us here in Aalborg, Denmark for two weeks this summer... We're hooking up with them, and I'm sure they have some kind of idea how to have fun in Ohio... I have a feeling we'll be dragged to lots of keg-parties and pot-smoking... Which can't be all bad... And I'll just have to find some girls to keep me warm... ;o) Oh, and thanks for the tip on the hotel - I think it's this one: http://www.hinewyork.org/ isn't it? ;o)

BrettFromTibet => Thank you very much... Much obliged... ;o)

Hey there. im from ohio. i went on a "ghost hunt" in the Shawshank prison (mansfield, i believe its called). its pretty cool, but i dont think you'll have time for that sort of thing... not to mention its pretty cold now, so i wouldnt suggest it. Ohio has a small psy scene in cleveland, check out Goahead productions for more info.

party wise, not much happens here. you will have to travel a little bit. columbus has a decent "commercial trance" scene, but i doubt you'll be looking for that sort of thing. also, i think columbus has some of the coolest malls, and its christmas so they will be packed. cleveland and columbus are worth checking out, just go on an adventure and see what happens. that seems like the best way to have fun around here. keep in touch.

i have some friends that go to Athens for college and they do nothing but keg parties. some of the drinking games can be fun, but it can get kinda mindless at times. if you're into that sort of thing than Athens is the place for you, they're famous for that (at least around here).

Hostels in NYC -

http://www.hostelhandbook.com/usa/nynyc.htm

I stayed for 3 weeks at the Whitehouse Hotel in the Bowery. Cheap, very basic, but safe, go to their website to read what they say about their rooms (just enough space to sleep), and to reserve rooms.

http://www.whitehousehotelofny.com/

$56.50 for each double room per night.

For $70 double room the Hotel 17 is really nice, 5 mins from Union Sq.

Hope you find somewhere.

If you want to stay in cheap places in Manhattan, go for the Youth Hostels. They are safe and clean and dirt cheap. We do it all the time when we go from DC to NYC to go clubbing. Also, avoid big glitzy restaurants in NYC in areas like Times Square. Its all show, expensive as hell and the food tastes lke crap. Go to family owned places in NYC, you will get much more bang for the buck in the food department.
Whats cool about New York is that the metro will take you anywhere instantly. Try SOHO for some cool and unique shopping. Have fun

Although Athens is fairly south in Ohio, If you ever make your way north to Michigan, I'll extend an offer to show you around Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan along with anything else you might want to see around Detroit. I'm graduating soon and I only have a few classes next semester so I'm probably going to be pretty bored. Enjoy your stay in the USA.
