Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Music Gets Me High & Samrat B. are proud to announce the release of India’s first book on electronic music – HUB.

Hub is India’s first and only anthology of electronic music – a legitimate record of everything that’s past and currently happening in terms of music, artists, events and more. The book hopes to create further awareness of Indian electronica via distribution of information, which has not been done before. The published material will serve as an official statement for and about the people involved in this field and give a much-needed voice to this rising subculture.

This book includes:

1. History: A brief history of electronic music and the impact of technology on music in India (1982 to current).

2. Artist Profiles: Complete profiles of electronic bands & DJ’s, each containing detailed information about the artist, their discography and contact information. Covers 60 plus artists from India and Indians settled abroad. The book itself spans over a 1000 artists from 1982 to now.

3. Features: A collection of features to highlight and critically examine the impact of electronic music in India with respect to prevailing tastes, lifestyle, clubs and the various fringe and lesser-known facets of this rising subculture.

Examples:

*Impact of music technology in India.
*Rise of the DJ
*Role of electronic music in Bollywood
*The Asian diaspora success story

4. Resources: This section of the book will be most beneficial to music industry counterparts when they want to establish a working relationship with India. It contains information and contact details of most:

* Artist Booking & Management Agencies
* Venues
* Labels
* Online Music sites
* Sound & equipment vendors

5. CD:
The book will include a CD compilation of songs by select Indian electronica artists.

They didn't cover much on psytrance with this one, just a few artists producing the psy-progressive & techno sound.

Will definitely be pushing for more in the next one, especially a full inclusion of Indian psytrance artists and discography. In the meantime, check it out, it's quite a good read, and if for nothing else, have written an article pertaining to the scene.

There are tons of copies in Delhi, if anyone is up for it email hub@mgmh.net, pick up your copies (mention it's for the trance music community and they'll provide them for free), and then help spread copies around to other cities.

It's a really high quality print book, coffee table style, and a very significant publication for the whole Indian electronic movement in general. Shall see if we can get some of the tracks from the CD up here too.

Did you say "Free"?

How does that work??

@minus, yeah that locked zoom function is quite annoying.

@mumu, It's a collaborative effort with Germany (Goethe Institute). They funded a significant chunk of the project so there is a quota for free copies. There are also some for sale out in stores across the country, think it's 500 bucks a book with the CD.

As with all these magazines, dj competitions , they wish to promote their freinds , freinds of freinds, girlfreinds etc its funny they mention so much bout Goa trance, but not even 1 goa/psytrance artist bio is included, yet they include labels like third eye records , shivlink etc which tells me alot of it is based on bias, also alot of wild claims in there , with breaking charts etc on psyshop , beatport?? many of the compilations i feature on countlessly break charts every now and then ehhehe , but cds of 500 copies only , can it be considered serious? who knows.. many other big claims there but no real facts to proove anything ,whats Pentagram and so many other bands with pictures of them playing guitars etc doing in this ?????

it's based primarily on visibility through live gigs. this has created issues with many artists in many genres including some commercial DJs who wanted to be on there, but the bottom line is someone has done this, and has focused more on the producer aspect of things. get a hold of the book, you'll know where the effort was focused on (PM me your address, shall have a copy sent to you)

it's definitely a bit out there with some of the inclusions, like rock bands using electronics. also some of the label bio's were copy pasted so a lot of claims are off the mark. some typos in articles also. no labels from the heavy psychedelic sounds were listed either, right from the old ones out of bombay and goa upto the new netlabels like liquidfrequency.

will be pushing for much more representation for psytrance artists in the next print. they'd asked me for data on this but there wasn't enough time or matter to get it all ready. the only published contribution this time was a general article on psytrance in India.

created this thread to collect info, if you could add to this it would be help tremendously.

I am happy you acknowledge the errors and misinformation in the magazine,Also i am not expressing any frustration of my name not being included in this book, rather that since this book is going to be read by so many people they deserve to know the absolute truth and not vague descriptions,yes electronic music is a big genre in itself and it can be hard to compile information , none the less imo the information should be refined and factual since this is mass media. I genuinly respect some artists on this mag such as Nasha who has generally catapulted electronic music in India.

And it also depends the angle from which the authors of this mag look at electronic music. Connecting a guitar to an amplifier also makes it electronic , but really in the sense of a genre? i sense an agenda here. I think being genuinly recognized for your talent is something and buttering up for being recognized is very lame. Make a poll for everyone to reply who they want to be featured in your next Mag i say and keep it trasparent for everyone to see.

Hi,

I wish the distribution of music were more streamlined, and I often try to ponder how it will go more smoothly.

I think all good things come to those who are patient and ready to wait

This imo is a great start. Getting this organized and published requires time and effort. Kudos to all involved.

Looking forward to more....
