Okay, I just recently got interested in playing chillout music. I'm an amateur house DJ. My question is, how do you guys mix this type of music. I find it hard using traditional beatmixing techniques. The tracks just have such wildly different bpms, and beat styles? Still, I don't like cheating (i.e. just transitioning to the next track while the current one is 'down'). ANY tips would be appreciated. |

it's rare to find djs beatmixing chillout tracks.
however, if you want to do it, you typically need to match on the snares, and very rarely on the kicks. if the snares clash off beat, it's a disaster. if the kicks don't match, it's not such a big deal, and you can drop out or crossfade the bass eq to cover it.
however, you have further complexities of say, the highhats on one track clashing with the tabla on another track.
i tend to beatmix most tracks, and i only know of two other djs in san francisco that can do it. it's nice to keep a downtempo or midtempo dancefloor moving without the typical long intro/outtro fades, or the "drop the next beat during the outtro" mix (which often puts in a track at a completely different tempo and beat structure - making the dancefloor lurch severely)
in any case, it's handy to have equipment that you can create seamless digital loops in cue in order to beat match. some high end CD decks have this function, as do software DJ programs (traktor, virtual dj)
