How to mix ambient / chillout music?!

You CAN beatmatch chill music, but it's a more complicated affair than with dance music (like trance). I find it best to do this with a software platform like Ableton Live. I run all my chill tracks through Rapid Evolution (a free program) and detect both BPM and musical key. I find tracks that are relatively close together in tempo and then mix by key (there's a lot of information about this out there -- just Google for "harmonic mixing." I like the Camelot Easy Mix system of doing it). Warping the tracks in Ableton is good because it allows for accurate beatmatching on tracks even when the rhythmic elements aren't very pronounced (which is the case in a lot of chill music). It also helps to pick chill tracks with are more rhythmic, especially if you're spinning on CD. Tunes with that "slow trance" sound are good for this too.

Not at all, it's way easier.
Just find the cue point, and internally match it with the track playing, then calculate, without any software or anything like that, just your ears, how close you are to the tempo.
Jog a bit...voilá.
In other styles you have to match at 130+.
In this style usually from 100 to 120 at most.
So...way easier.

You know, I can beatmatch dance music by ear much more easily than chillout music. Maybe because the faster tempo allows me to hear "feedback" more quickly. To each his own, though.

Let just add that it takes a big amout of time to find tracks with close BPM and that many of them are unmixable.

Not unmixable...but the mix just doesn't sound right...and many times it's just silly to miss a really nice intro-outro in order to beatmatch.

just keep your hands busy while the music plays...
in your pockets or rolling a spliff...but far from the mixer.

i don't think slower = easier. if you're playing at 150 bpm, you can cover +/- 7.5 bpm with only 5% pitch adjustment. however, when you're playing at 75bpm, you'll only cover 3.75 bpm with the same percentage of pitch. this seriously limits the amount of tracks you can beatmatch without "forcing" the mix by massive percent increases/decreases

i wish i had a one meter pitches....you know transform them as sonic youth did with guitars....
limit pitch is boring......

ahhhhh....playing sober helps a lot #))))

but seriously......beatmatching is not so relevant here....as you want to mix "ambient/chill out"

just take the tunes you love man be tuned with the people .......

relate it with food.....love cooking?

so...now that you have cooked 150bpm fried chicken

145 bpm jumping bread with 140bpm hot cofee

i want you to think about making a cake.....flavoured one....substancial.....dry...but wet....sweet but not too much...not too much salty also(if not, people will ask for fried chicken)....
juicy,fruity,spacey.....
easy,see?

nice dreams

(fried chicken......hummmm.....good idea...)

Beatmatching can make a mix from "good" to "pure orgasmotronic". If you want an example try:

beatmatching can make a mix from painful to pure endless agony.
examples can be found anywhere, anytime...most of the time.
