it's a tough question that we can look on both of its sides:
MoE u are right of course - we all want diversity and as much new ideas as possible.
although
let's try to understand WHY there is a big number of labels - and I really don't think that it's for the musical variety (which is very nice to think). I think (and you all know I guess) that it's for money (oh no I said money). And it's reflecting on the compilations obviously - poor production, poor musical variety and young artists who are eager to release their first tracks.
Sometimes I would think that small labels, without a special idea behind their work and image - would die. But it seems today ppl enjoy this constant non-variable compilations and therefor someone is making money, and someone else thinks the scene needs a little shake.
MoE - keep in mind about quality over quantity.... this is a good example.
cheers.

At the moment there are around 150-170 psytrance labels (from ambient to full-on) which is a huge number. But I don't think there is any money making for the labels, with the low sales in the scene labels can be happy to balance their costs. Any new label will lower the sales for all other labels, not to mention the hard job for distributions & record shops. The down side is a lot of bad releases or double/triple track releases which is a good thing for the artists I guess, making more money from different labels (but still it is peanuts, without performing it is just a xtra spliff for the night).
There is allready a very good article about this topic: http://www.isratrance.com/www/general/articles/viewarticle.php?id=6

Many artist make their own labels this days, to make a bit of money out of it, if not the labels take the big piece of the cake.

nothing wrong with small labels, we all gotta start somewhere and sometimes these small ones are the only ones taking experimental risks

I dunno about big labels not releasing anything fresh. I thought Dragonfly hit the nail on the head with Beaches and Cream ? And you don't get much bigger than Dragonfly. Spirit Zone Beat-ific comp is also quite nice... |

The problem is that when smaller labels release something new and different then very very few people buy and support the release...most people just go again for the same old recipy....same names, same style....
....no experimentation, no evolution....but IMO very few people seem to care....
e.g. one of my favourite & most innovative artists, Rip Van Hippie (asutralia) has released 3 albums over the years. In comparison he has sold less cds altogether than a single release of any artist being released by a known label who is just immitating the gms style, copy-pasting stupid drug samples and banging at 145-150 bpms with absolutely no music composition in the tracks.... |

i agree with u, and these small labels would die sooner or later.. so why damaging the big labels?
i say it because the scene is so small.. and not many people like psytrance so why so many labels are needed? it seems that many labels are being opened so that everyone can release his music.. even if he just started to make music he is "on a rush" to release it.. so people rush to make music, many labels are being opened, big labels sales gets lower and the scene is slowly dying..
and regarding that artist from australia.. why didn't he release his music on a known label?
u can find "Anything U Want" using the search... |

Because Rip Van Hippie's music is not "commercially viable". Many people will find it "too weird".
Time and time again when I have contacted my favorite artists, often people who have many more unreleased tracks than released tracks, and I ask them why they didn't release more music.....guess what the answer is? |
