How does an artist get discovered?
Is it thru constant distribution of promo's?
Do you target a specific label/'s ?

How does an upcoming Dj get to play at all these fancy gigs/ underground venues etc..

Established Dj's have agents / labels etc who ensure bookings.

All these Top names must have started somewhere ?

I think first of all if you need to make good music (artist) or play good DJ sets (DJs).

Get that right, and the rest will come.           ---------------------------------------------

send out demos to everyone, party/festival organizers, labels, mates, give out some demos at partys to the right people. always add ur contacts and u might get lucky. but first make sure u are good enough, get second opinions from friends, monkeys and other animals           "Great things are only possible with outrageous requests." These labels must have to sift thru tons of new demos etc...

But are organisers partial and willing to expose local talent ???

This is where new labels really hit the mark at. They are usually more willing to expose local producers than many of the other well established labels. Some may say that new labels are the reason why the overall music quality has gone down, but I personally believe and maybe I am a little biased here, that the new labels keep fresh blood in the music and help prevent the music from getting completely stale.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

@mubali

thanx bro.. So a wannabe artist targets certain labels? The ones which probably promote and are better known for whatever style he prefers.
Same thing with labels , i guess.
Wud tehy entertain someone whose good, but not what they prefer ?           ~*** You can tell By the way i use my walk, Im a woman's man, No time to Talk***~

well karma all labels are based on the particular styles they want to release . so mostly labels may prefer that same style .

releasing on a big label isint easy and according to me the smaller labels now have better releases and variety in their releases .

anyways to get to play at a festival isint easy either . u need to be known for that and the only way this is possible is if u give out demos of ur mix to labels , promoters etc

I agree with you, I do feel that it keeps the music fresh too and also every label has a class of it's own maybe too.

I've been observing the music world for many years. Especially the trance and chillout parts of it, with whom I have been involved in almost every aspect for years.

So I'll give a more detailed advice, I've given it to many young artists, they usually don't listen, but I'll keep doing it anyway

Make music, more and more music, get people to listen to it and feedback you (by words, by dancing, whatever). Try to get people who are experienced to listen and give you tips, that can create very big shortcuts for you in your music making.

Don't think about releasing, don't think about being a star, don't think about being famous, and for sure don't think about getting a blue color in Isratrance.

Be humble, try to learn and get better all the time, and work hard. Always write more and more- no substitute for experience.

Start thinking about releasing when people will start to chase you for your music- if your music is good that will happen.

It's not a problem these days to release a track with so many labels craving for something to put on their CDs that come out every month and sell 300 copies.

Ask yourself this question: do I wanna make music seriously or do I want to be able to show my grandson one day a piece of plastic and say to him: "you see, when your grandfather was you he released a track on a CD / an album".

Both are valid motivations. If it's the second, than forget all I'm saying here. If it's the first, then read carefully.

Learn music- take piano leassons, whatever. It will help you a lot!

Understand- not everything you write must be released, even if it's your baby and you love it, even Led Zeppeling and Pink Floyd haven't released everything they wrote.

Don't rush things- it's better to release couple of tracks that will get everyone talking and then a debut that will stun everyone, then to release 3 albums by that time that left almost no impression with most people. It will pay you more by any criteria.

Same goes for DJs- practice, listen to good DJs, know your music well, learn, when you feel you are perfect, start trying to get spots in line-ups. Play more and more- if you're good you'll work your way up.

Just to clarify:
1. I haven't mentioned the creativity and inspiration bit- that's of course things you must have with you and in front of your eyes (and other senses) always.
2. I don't mean that promotion and connections are not important- they are. Always, in everything- we're humans that's how we work. But first have the substance going- then get to formalities.           ---------------------------------------------
