shahar, FSOL Dead cities has samples in it which give you chills... like " I had killed a man, a man that looked like me..." these give direction and atmosphere... but i agree with your points, no need for lyrics.

i didnt meant that there's a need in lyrics, only that its a way to understand the concept, and the main idea of the album...
and as i said before, it all has to do with how much does the artist gives from himself to the album...
that is why, u can easily tell apart from someone who creates a cd, with no theme, or any love, just for the process of making money out of it, and those who make there music from a pure place, such as ur example, of jaz and classic music, on which u can actually feel delited to know that there some good people left....
When the fuck r u gonna get sick, of that lousy TECHNOSHIT?!

yes story telling albums
i have been listening this all the time
can some one pls explain me what is this story concept??
the artist makes an album with somethings in mind tries to make a mesage
many people listen to the album. everybody in the back of the mind knows that there is some story in this album, as this is what people say, so during the album he starts thinking about a story which is his own imagination
while the same thing happens with the other person but he thinks of a different story
and same with all the thousands of people
so the result is there are 1001 stories of the same album apart from the one which the producer thought of
So all chances that for some people they do not find any story in the album. not necessary they do.
if someone tell me that every album has a story and you need ears to understand it, i will ask him to tell me the story what you understand nd not just ya there is some story (just thinkin tht there has to be one)
pls ur views on it |

Alien-ated! You got the point with the creative process of being a music listener. The point with listen to music is to create your own story on a base of what an artist have created ... if an artist want everyone listening to his/her music to get the same feeling as him/herself his really out of it (IMO).
When I'm talking about album telling stories or not I'm just saying if I think the album have a good base for letting me be creative as a listener ... not if I get the "hidden" message from the artist.

I heard of a music professor that said once that there are two kinds of musicians the ones that make music and the ones that listen to it.
So yes, the story in a musical creation is a colaboration between the two sides (same for any kind of art).
And yes, a story can be there without even the artist being aware of it. But another option is that the artist either has nothing really to tell, or isn't bothered to make an effort to tell me something of meaning (of course he might be saying something I don't understand or don't connect to).
About how I see a concept album- for me it's an album where all the tracks are connected to each other by a stronger pattern than just "we were made by this and this between this date and that date"- meaning that the artist is trying to convey a message not on the level of a note, a melody or a track, but on the level of an album, which is harder and more complex (and that message doesn't have to be hidden, btw). Again, Dead Cities is a good example, or if you want a much more obvious one- Pink Floyd- The Wall.

exactly shahar
so if the tracks of an album are interchanged in order of sequence; still one will make some story out of it
similarly if u close your eyes and someone plays 9 different tracks from 9 different albums (all new tracks to u) even then u will feel some story in it and tend to relate it.
so why do most people tend to listen to the whole album from start to end thinking there is an story in it?
story telling can be more of a factor in a Dj set where in the Dj is an expert to put and mix one track of after the another which takes someone into a journey with the levels of sounds. but except of a concept album, i do not think that there is a story in every album (even the artists dont think bout it) |

But listenning to the whole CD from beginning to end, i believe its a must, even though i couldn't ever calmly listen to an entire electro album...
But that already my problem, one of many..
And some albums dont even have a "story", thats true alien-ated, but i think that will only reflect the amount of dedication and consideration putten in an album, and if an artist doesn't even bother to think his album through that far, then i say, ==H-E-'-S----N-O----G-O-O-D==

Sorry to interrupt, but I just want to say again that it is very important for the tracks to fade into each other! For me no story can happen unless the tracks are continuous!!! |

Oh! That's a must!!!
Once in my life i heard an album, that pauses between songs.... like, wtf?!
I can understand that in rock, jazz, reggae, or any other style of music, but in that is what makes electro kinga unique, the flow, that goes on and on, as if everything is one really long track...

If a track is strong enough it can tell a story by itself, think of something like Sasha's 'Xpander'.
Have to admit though, I usually prefer to hear trance mixed rather than the tracks be kept separate. This is why I like hearing live sets so much.

hello swedish boys...
ok, this is funny, but i was listening to some new music today and I was wondering how other people listen to music. This is easy for me. If it is not chilled stuff I will always stand up in my living room while it is a little dark. I kind of imagine that i am in a field somewhere, and not in urban auckland city. If the first track makes me move a little then i keep listening, if not, i skip some, and then if i still dont like it i skip tracks.. I belive that it is best to stand up when you listen to nu tunes.
okay thats all. |

Thats why Psytrance is a Trip without Guide.. You are your own guide. Unlike many other music genres theres no guide to force you into his thread.
