How do you listen to an album?

Hi Mates!

Marcus and I had a long conversation on our lunch about the way people listen on albums. At first you may think that this question is a little bit strange and stupid but please continue the reading and think a little bit about it.

One way of listen to music is to press play on the first track and listen to the end of the CD. Another way is to jump over some track or even jump between different cds while listening. Yet another way is to just take out the tracks you like, put them in your computer and then make a play list together with other artist’s music.

I personally almost always listen to an album as it is from beginning to the end since I almost always mostly appreciate the way the artist have arrange and build up the full album and not only the individual tracks.

The root of this conversation is our own album (we’re just ready with the last track … always some self promotion;). We tried to skip thru the tracks just to feel the flow of the album and we directly felt that very much of the albums beauty got lost when you didn’t listen from start to end and most important … if you skipped the intros and outrus. It’s very interesting how the whole feeling of a track can change just if you make a slight different track order or if you let the track start with the kick or a floating pad.

Please let me know your thoughts about this … as an artist it’s very interesting to hear what you think about this and in witch ways you’re listening to albums.

Cheers!

Hum, I always listen to album fom begining to end on first time...(in chill out albums normally listen full album all the times)

But after I know the album I just listen to my favorite ones

Actually, I was thinking about this the other day...

At least in my case, has anyone noticed how the track numb 5 is so many times the best track of the album?

The other day I was showing some new tunes to a friend, only choosing my fav stuff.

After 5 albums I realized that I had just played the track numb 5 of all the albums!:) hehe

Also, numb 2 give some surprises some time, and track number 7 usually is also a quite special one...

Is this all just in my mind lol, or are more ppl there thinking same thing? hehehe

By the way Son Kite, loved your live here in the summer, I was very impressed with some live tricks u've got! And the party atmosphere was great, very unique!

And by the way, the Nord u used in the live was mine

Any gigs planned for Portugal in near future?

hahaha

this is nice... I understand that from the artist perspective it can be frustrating to hear "decaptated" music... But sorry Seb, I´ll take my muzik without rules...

Number 5? Well maybe we got to something... Are there different ranges of psyche? Cause for me it´s mostly number 3 hahaha

When I'm at home I listen to an album from its beginning (always) but not always till it's end, maybe because of time, or style or I may have something else to do... On the other hand while I'm driving usually I skip some tracks (when I know the cd well) and when I'm with a friend or girlfriend usually I play "dj" playing only the tracks I think are the best from many different albums.

Overall, I believe that we need to listen to an album with attention from its beginning till its end in order for us to know the album, understand the story and be able to appreciate the artist's work... That's what I do whenever I buy a new cd.

my 2 centavos

btw, what's the name of the 3rd track?           cna't find it

I'm glad to see that you've put some thought into this one.

For me it depends on the quality and composition of the album.

To be honest I don't think there are many "real" albums on the psytrance scene (ambient/chillout is very different). That being an album put together as an album, and not just a more or less random collection of tracks. Not that the music is necessarily worse though - it's just more of a compilation feel to me. Luckily taste differs though.

With most albums I tend to skip to my favourites after a few listens, but with "real" albums I most often enjoy the whole thing. Some examples of newer "real" albums could be Ticon "Aero", Saiko-Pod "Phutures and Options" and Younger Brother "A Flock Of Bleeps".

But again, taste differs.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

nice question there seb.
when it comes to an artist album, I usualy tend to hit play on the first and listen through. i normally find it the smartest way of listening to an album. however, several albums, well, i gave them one consecutive listen, and than just played the tracks in a different order.
some producers (not artists) simply have no sense when it comes to edit the final tracklist on an album, or the artists themselves lack the conviction to tell them otherwise. for example - nissimyani's latest album would be a whole lot better had it's tracklist been reversed...

when it comes to compilations, i almost always play them from start to finish. i like getting an idea of what others' ideas of how a set should sound like, and it usually gets the job done.           "We Do Not Allways See Things As They Are. We See Things As We Are" -Ancient Chinese Proverb

Good topic, Seb...
I usually find myself listening to an album from beginning to end Then after a full listen, I'd play the tracks I didn't like that much again to see if I missed something - give it a second chance...

whole album, from start till end.
as i see it, artists spend alot of time on prepering an album... some times even more then a year.
so in some way, it should reflect a long time period in the artists life, mood, thoughts etc etc...
its just more developed then 1 track.
skipping 1 track is like skipping 1 or 2 months
so ofcourse, the album losing its all structure and concept while jumping between trax.

I too usually play a new CD from start to finish, at least for the first few listens. That often involves a nice smoke during the first track.

Seb,

What I meant is that I hvn´t ever thought about how I was going to listen to an album... Some times u start it from the beggining but at some point u just change it, with no good reason... It´s some strange force that strikes u... That´s what I mean with no rules... Some times I just jump the first track (or a couple of them, going right to 3 )...

I don´t know, and don´t really want to build a generalisation about it... imo our subconcious is too powerfull a tool, u know...

I used to listen to random tracks from everything - but now it's just the albums from beginning to end.

Another thing regarding this subject is how the ”hitpotential” of each track can be good or bad for the full album. If you have too many hit tracks or to many very special tracks on an album it easily happens that you don’t appreciate any of the tracks so much.

Often you need tracks between the really good ones that aren’t so typical or superb … then you appreciate more when the next really good one comes. This can also be compared to a dj set … some djs just want to play the hit monster track from start to end but then all the tracks gets a little bit boring. It’s much better if you get some good but not too special grooves in between the tracks that make you freak and scream!

Like eating candy from morning to night …. Get’s a little bit untasteful after a while even thou each candy would have tasted just lovely if you ate one a day!

So when you just take out your favourite tracks and put them together with all your other favourite tracks you’ll probably loose this middle tracks that may be the key to get the perfect experience of the album.
