hey all. I am thinking of gettin an home cinema 5+1 with tall speakers. I was wondering how these systems are for playin music. Is it only suitable for tv movies and games or will it be good sound to blast? if anyone has some input i'd appreciate it. thanks.

When your playing music from audio cd it will be 2.1 or 2.0, sacd/dvd audio can be 5,1. Which means only the front left and right speakers would be working.

Floorstanding speakers are better than Home theater in a box which comes with small speakers.

Best way to go about it is buy good floor standing speakers first then a 5.1 amp then a subwoofer then in final phase add matching center and surround speakers. Invest one component at a time and go for a quality system rather than spending all at once.

what brand are you considering ?

The multichannel music world is horrible right now. I would just use 5.1 for movies and get a receiver that can turn the other 3-4 off for music to just use the fronts (and the sub if you have to). If you do that and you're using floorstanders, just try to put most of your money into the fronts and sub and get some smaller bookshelf speakers and a decent center (since something like 90% of vocals in your 5.1 movies are going to be from the center).           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Definitely..start with a really nice pair of floorstanders for music if you're serious about this, and they'll be even better for movies since you get to hear their dynamics.           You believe in the users?

Not true as many home theater system have an option to have the stereo sound come out of 4 speakers (and the middle one) if it has stereo capacity...

As to getting yourself a 5.1 home system, I can only say congratulations and welcome to the sound of today!

What you should watch out for is the .1 (sub) as this is a crucial point to your new systems quality. I also recommend getting yourself an spl meter and weighing your room once the system is set up!

Welcome to the club hehehe

Ya but if you use pro logic to emulate 5.1 or 4 channels from stereo sound it sounds like crap whereas is you use sacd/dvd-a where it is mastered in 5.1 then its sonic heaven.           "Whoever said the best things in life are free... obviously grew their own bud"

I wouldn't use Prologic either, many 5.1 home systems have a system called Matrix, which does sound nicer than Prologic, but you are right, nothing beats a true 5.1 mastered sound experience!           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

It would sure be nice if some more people started 5.1 mixing their music instead of keeping on telling how nice it sounds...

Please don't take it personal anyone, but this is somewhat frustrating to me...

Para Halu, S Range and some were to do a 5.1 set in Shanti Jatra but sadly the festival got canned for unforeseen reasons.

I want to hear psychedelic trance in DTS HD Master Audio.           "Whoever said the best things in life are free... obviously grew their own bud"

Whoopps, sorry, yes, DTS IS indeed better than prologic 2. You are correct.
I meant DTS versus AC3, and I do prefer a high resolution AC3, simply because of the coding. In my book an AC3 file and the same bitrate DTS counterpart compared, seems to me that the AC3 file sounds better. It is also used more these days. Mind you, they are arguing about this in about a 100.000 different forums, so I suggest make it a personal preference. Many people say that DTS sounds more transparent, I honestly don't think so.
As far as decoding is concerned, Prologic 2 does beat prologic by a long shot...
