Hi everyone,

I have the money to buy a nord rack 2X, but i ask myself if i should not buy some vsts like Gladiator and save the rest of the money. What do you think ? Is the nord 2X worth the hundreds of euros of difference compared to a synth like Gladiator ?

Personally I would grab a nord above any software at the moment.

Yes, but some things make me doubt. For example, i have already sylenth, and i'm almost sure that it beats the nord for sounds like supersaws. The problem is that sylenth is not complete (no FM, PWM ...) and not any vst has sylenth sound quality.

Your money is better spent on a nord with my motherboard currently fried i can still make sounds and that takes the edge of the pain away for the moment (not so easy if i kept everything inside the box). A nord may not be everything in one box, but that was never itīs intent. For what it does, it is still unbeaten by vstīs. I see so much second hand gear for sale at prices that are on par with software, that itīs extremely hard for me to choose software synths over hardware ditto (granted it always has been like that with me)           Mastering available here:

What do i need in addition of the synth itself to use it in cubase ? (midi cables ...) I'm only used to vst until now.           http://www.myspace.com/psyrit

you need:
good audio interface with enough inputs and midi in/out.
midi cable
stereo audio cable

best get two midi cables.
one to control the synth from your DAW, the second to record the CC data (knob movements) from the nord into your DAW. this is not necessary if you already have a nice controller, but if not, i strongly recommend 2 cables.

the nord has 4 audio outputs, so to use it's full potential, you want 4 inputs on your audio interface.

Thank you alot i think i understand it way better now. And what do you think about emulators like synth1 ? Is there a sound difference that justify the price to buy the hardware version ?           http://www.myspace.com/psyrit

imo nothing beats physical knobs on a piece of actual gear. Software doesn't come close. Can't wait to get my own hardware synth soon <3            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Easiest way to answer that question would be to try it out and listen for yourself. My own ears and experience tell me a nord is still far superior to any vst in terms of sound and usability. Contrary to many other hardware synths at the time, Clavia designed the nord to be an immidiately tweakable instrument with little time wasted clicking through endless menuīs.
Plugin designers have a tendency to load features on that are poorly sounding or implemented plus an OS upgrade/crossgrade/downgrade might render your software useless. My nord on the other hand has stayed the same since it was built and has survived several OS changes. That being said it all depends on the sound you like, and if you like the sound plugins can offer you thats cool. Some like the sound of hardware others couldnīt care less. On a last note....paying money for something usually also means a bigger commitment to learn to use it by heart, at least for me. I am personally more inclined to use my dearly bought hardware compared to say the, in some cases, more convenient software route.           Mastering available here:

i'd say you should stick to software. you've got only constructive recommendations for buying a hardware synth and you still bring up the advantages of software and complain about the nord's price. you've answered your own question several times.

btw: if you want the super saw sound you should buy a roland jp-8080 instead of a nord rack.

it's not just a nord, and that's it..

it's more like:
you have the nord and want a nice interface. then you get an offer for a cool analogue mono and buy it. then you realise that you need a mixer. when you have the mixer you think that outboard fx is much better and get a multi fx. then your kick and bass would be much better if you had an outboard comp. to keep the handling easier you buy a dedicated synth for pads and a second mono just for basses, that means you need a bigger mixer. at this point you realize that you have bought cheap units and want to upgrade to pro stuff.. ;-)

exaclty it never end except if you stick with software and a good d/a.
i like more hardware myself but i m more intrested in analog stuff over hardware va (good plugs are too close and run to some outboard they sound even better) , last time i got a nord there for 1 or 2 months i don t even turned it on (didn t make much music thought..)but if you want the nord sound you need one !
