First of all for all the purists out there: Technically this is not psytrance, but Guy J is from Israel (Isra) and I find this record seriously entrancing (trance), so I am gonna post a review about this anyways, because I am seriously blown away and need to share the good news with all of you

With all technicalities out of the way, let me commence: On Friday I had a long train ride across Germany ahead of me so I randomly searched Beatport for new music to listen to on the way. By chance, I came across the new album "1000 Words" by Israel`s own Guy J on Bedrock Records. I had been aware of Guy J for some years and have bought random tracks of his here and there, but I have never been a huge fan and I had always mentally filed him away as one of those artists that are kinda cool but not cool enough to actively follow their output. Anyways, since the album was provided in the weird format of two continuous mixes plus all the included tracks separately as well, I decided to give it a chance because two mixes would be perfect for the long train ride.

After getting on the train I popped in Mix 1 and wasn`t impressed at all, because it seemed like random chill-out with weird transitions and a weird kind of flow. So I skipped to Mix 2 and something amazing happened: From the time the first hypnotic beat made its entrance I was transported into some kind of other mental state, like everything else around me disappeared into the background and it was just me, the music in my headphones and the beautiful landscape passing by outside the window. I was reading a book at the time as well, but I just dropped it in my lap and didn`t even look at it again for the next 80 minutes. The sound was just so deep, hypnotic and in a strange way "essential", I couldn`t even tell if it was house, techno or progressive, it was something that lives on the edges of all of these genres with just one clear goal in mind: TRANCE! And even though it may sound strange at first, the first comparison that came to my mind was Atmos. Not because they sound the same, but because both have the same vibe in their music and both somehow live on the edges of progressive, house and techno to produce real deep trance in the truest sense of the word.

Metaphysical ramblings aside, Mix 2 is really something to behold! After the intro it starts out with two of the most beautiful, deep and contemplative tracks I have heard in a long time (entitled "Doves" and "Limbo", as I found out later), and these two really set the tone for the rest of the mix. From there the journey goes further and further into the depths of the subconscious mind, taking twists and turns along the way, sometimes leaning towards melodic prog. house ("Sahara"), deep techno ("Teva") and deep house ("No one under but you") only to climax with the scorching "Personal Haze" and to a lesser degree "Azamuth". Then I gave Mix 1 another chance and on second listen it is fucking brilliant as well, especially the extremely psychedlic "Stay Cow" and cheesy-emotional "Fly".

To sum it up, this album is fucking brilliant! Guy J has created two deep amazing journeys, and best of all, he does it in his unique style that transcends classical genre borders. Plus, the production is really amazing (as can be expected from Bedrock), he has that combination of elegance and effortlessness while packing a huge punch underneath that also sets Atmos apart (even though he doesn`t sound like Atmos at all). And I must say the weird format of two mixes plus all separate tracks really fits this kind of music really well, the tracks really unfold their magic in the mix, I don`t know if I would have enjoyed it as much listening to the tracks separately. In this digital day and age, maybe other artists should look into this format as well.

Man, we are in sync

I just recently bought the 3 CDs box set version of this album. It is indeed a brilliant release.
And just before you posted your review, I posted about one of the tracks from the album here:
http://forum.isratrance.com/which-electro-tech-house-techno-is-playing-at-your-home/page22/

Both mixes are spellbinding all the way in my opinion. Creative and diverse in style and ambience. Full of atmosphere and soul. From dark to uplifting, and from dreamy to electrifying. CD 1 is indeed on the more downtempo electronica side of things, and CD 2 is more on the tech house, techno, progressive side of things. I agree - the production on this release is wondeful.

Here is a preview of CD1:

And "Doves" from CD 2 & 3:

'1000 Words' combines the classic and modern in an interesting way.

Cheers !

The reference to Atmos is very pertinent.

Deep, hypnotic, loopy as hell, totally entrancing: that perfectly characterises J's music.           http://myspace.com/adenbeatersweet

Good review!

Mix 2 is EPIC!! Listening to it right now and I know exactly what you are talking about in your review when you skipped to the second mix after listening to the first. I hadn't read your review before listening and now its strangely ironical how my reaction was exactly the same as yours.
