well, let's first define funk... Funk is a rhythm, like samba is a rhythm...

so how do u mix trance with funk? By making sure that ur rhythm uses funk rules... DnB rhythms, hiphop rhythms, rockNroll rhythms, all of those use the funk rules... make ur drums like that and ur mixing trance with funk...

An attentive person would say now that almost all trance already use rhythms like rockNroll and hiphop, only the kick/bass are straight... And that person would be right... But what u are talking about s the funk feeling, not the theory... That's a whole other problem... Cuz there are no rules as to how to create the feeling that something is funky..

Just a thought about the "funk" and "groove". If you take a typical 4/4 beat, and lay a groovy and or funky baseline benife it. Voilla! right? Because this is being done all of the time with many "psy-trance" artists.

David, the artists you mention are more psychedelic morning style than psy-funk, imo. loopus in fabula and haltya are funky psy in my understanding.

imo, there's a big difference between the two styles. the basslines and the overall energies of the music are quite different. the names just help to differentiate the style to make it easier for people who enjoy one, but not the other - and there are quite a few. if you claimed to be playing 'funky psy' at a party and played a set of those artists (even though many of them are great), i would feel slightly ripped off.

i mean, for example 'tech-trance' and 'progressive' have similar bpm's and developed from the same root, but they are not the same genre, with different sound, dedicated labels, artists, and fans. i don't think there's anything wrong with identifying sub-genres, it helps develop the music in different directions, imo.

I guess thats why I dont say "what" im going to play when I play out. this year I have focused on a certain sound in my head and many tend to say that it sounds funky so when alot of heads say that my set was funky I can only revert to what I played and those artist are what I play. SO in the end its all subjective I guess, right, I mean you didnt write the book... or did you. haha! loopus and fabula, I havent heard a track from them since like 2001. I will look into them again. I thought they were more proggy though (Iboga/tatsu days) but who knows what they are up to now. And squaremeat to me is like the bonkys and nick taylors of the genre. Edgecore records (aussy label used to do stuff that was way wacky and crazy like squaremeat. They kind of define there own sound and if you asked me where I would put squaremeat i wouldnt know what to say. hehe. I do like there early stuff though. Do you remember what was going through your mind when that Nervasystem & Aether album came out?(mama matrix most mysterious ... i think was the name) it was unique and very different from other sounds in that time. that album is a perfect example of self defining sounds. cool maybe if you come down to symbiosis you can hear what Ive been trying to hone in on as far as my interpretation of what funky psy is to me. And Ill go check the loopus and fabula / haltya to get your perspective.

I didn't write the book on it, but there's only one genre of music called FUNK - think P-Funk and James Brown.. psy-funk basslines and kicks, synths, etc. are a lot more 'funk' than, say, Cosmosis or Logic Bomb basslines.. you can tell the difference, here..

there's more that's not quite so obvious, like Jahbo's older stuff or most things on Gi'iwa records, for example - it's a different mood, a different accent on the kick, and the bassline that just makes you want to shake it, not to mention those sexy synths.

as to the stuff you mentioned - i am intimately familiar with many of those artists' work - i do know what you are talking about when you say some of their stuff is also funky.. it's funky, just not well.. funky in the same way, if you know what i mean.           ..it's just another party..
