Freebies at parties

This is an issue / problem I csame across quite a long time ago, an issue that is quite problematic for organisers.
Usually when organisers throw a party and invite a big name, naturally there are many many ppl who want to come and hear him. Most of the crowd wouldn't know the difference between Rinkadink (Alchemy Rec) and Joerg (SST) (this is only an example I give, please do not take these names as a real example). But many people that are active in the trance scene will be very interested in hearing such names playing here. So here's a situation where organisers get requests from artists, different label people and etc. asking them to add them on the free list to the party. These organisers usually don't say no, and there you got a party which half of its crowd is based on "scene ppl" that got in for free. Well, maybe not half, but a large number of people. And here comes a situation where the organisers loose money. Cause yes, maybe it seemed there were 300-400 people in the party, but actually only 200 people payed a ticket.
Some organisers learn from their mistakes and say "no more". We do not throw parties to make too much money, but we don't throw them to loose either. So they start to be really picky about the "freebies guest list" - which leads to many angry ppl not understanding why they have to pay.

I understand both sides - unfortunately.
I would like to hear your comments on that, since I'm hearing many discontented artists and party organisers.           Majority is never right!

I think that the organizers have to be picky about the free entrance list - I've seen parties that suffered immense losses even though they seemed like a huge success. Not everyone can allow themselves a lot of free entrances, because other than Moksha and Gabi&The Twins, no trance organizer in Israel can rest assured that his party will have a serious attendance unless they risk having a very bad crowd, even if their last 3 parties were amazing.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

I think that every one ( including the organizers close friends ) should pay to get into the party. This is merely the face of our scene showing us how much ego and lack of respect it has. Actually, some time ago, I was paying for entrances, and since I also got 'into the system' enjoying the free ride. Today, even it is harder finnansially - I prefer to pay, but not seing the huge line of ppl coming free of charge. The REAL free list shouldn't be more than 20 ppl - organizer's family and girlfriend/boyfriend and DJ's family and girlfriend/boyfriend.. That is it. All the rest should pay ( or have discounted tickets ) - but in any case to pay something to cover the expences of the organizer.           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

yeah yuli said itall. i'm not a person who gets free/discounted entrance. i think its not good when u get free entrance becoz u know the younger brothers friend of the older brother of the boyfriend of the older sister of an organizer. its not always a big relationship between non-paying ppl and the org's/artists           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

totally agree Yuli

Another issues is that the party organisers should stop putting 6+ DJ's on the line - up at the one day parties. This is for sure a money loosing idea and people do actually enjoy a party more where there's a good flow instead of 1-2 hours sets by many DJ's....

I agree that guest lists should be kept a a minimum. When I was involved with throwing parties back in Texas, we had one simple rule...if you help out with the party, you can get in for free. This entailed people that show up hours beforehand and help put up decorations, set up sound, etc. We were fortunate that a large percentage of the people coming to our parties were friends and understood that they had to pay. Also, a lot of them were coming from the Burningman community, so they were used to expecting that everybody pays, no matter who you know (or how special you think you are:))

There were occasional exceptions where a close friend had absolutely no money, but we would usually put them to work in those situations.

We were also very strict with the DJs & performers' personal guest lists. If the person was coming from out of town, we would allow them to bring two people for free. If they were local, they could bring one.

Our parties were usually quite small (100-400 people), so we had to be careful with freebies in order to be able to throw the next parties. It seemed to work well, and I only remember a couple instances of people being pissed off they could not get in for free.

This was also one reason I did not like using clubs....they often have their own guest lists of the employees personal friends and regulars. Bleh.

Yes, I also have no problem paying for a good party.
And I think most people should pay, except maybe those who are invited for PR or something like that. Don't be afraid of being professional.

I think most of u guys are right, and there shouldn't be that many ppl getting in parties for free.
now, about my own experience...well I go out to parties almost every weekend...there is no way I could afford paying that money every weekend as a student...so mostly I do go in for free. but I help the organizers in so many ways, like bringing a full car of friends that do pay with me, or by sending sms messages to many other ppl...so I think it's worth it for the organizers to let some ppl in for free.
another good and fair option IMO, is to charge the "addicts" (like me...) only for the cost of the party, not the full amount. this way everybody is happy and nobody looses money just cause they want to be nice...
and finaly, Elysium has a good point about the long line ups we see in parties lately. I would much rather have 3-4 dj's/artists playing in a party, and not 6-7, cause this way u really get to enjoy each and every one that plays. as a dj, there is nothing worse IMO than playing a 2 hours set. it's just not enough time to build up a real mind blowing set, the way it should be. I personaly need at least 3 hours...
boom!!

this happens a lot in my area (mostly in club parties)

some people say: "hey i'm the uncle of the friend of the aunt of the father of the grandma of the friend who was a teacher of the DJ!, give me a free enterance!"

well this is an exaggeration... but it's kinda of like that, i hate it...           u can find "Anything U Want" using the search...
