After much investigations I believe there is no answer naming names which will be the right answer to the question of who started trance as we refer to it today. It was a process which involved many people, many places and many musical directions.
Since it was not the question here really it need not be answered.

Since I don't really believe in generes I don't really feel there's an answer to the question poinson-inside asked as well. There definitely people who opened new directions and pioneered new sounds- the list is very very long.

And Anakoluth, if we're talking about Swiss artists that influenced the pioneers of psytrance I think The Young Gods are a name that should be mentioned!           ---------------------------------------------

heh... but don`t u think that psychedelic music is changing on our eyes..
if talking about sources of electronic music why anyone talked about Pink Floyd ? why not Led Zepelin?
all know that the start was not done by one person.. but it was not evolvyng all the time ... someone broke smth? isn`t it?
speaking about kraftwerk and others will not make anything.. it`s quet a matter of history now...

especially for many of the first UK artists starting to work with the early psychedelic trance the roots go to acid house, for example man with no name used to produce acid house on labels like urban acid back in the late 80`s...sven väth was definately one of the big influences, later working with the labels eye q and harthouse releasing the first koxbox stuff as well.ray castle was a major contributor too...i dont personally think that simnon posfords first productions were at all more "psychedelic" than many other early trance stuff from germany etc that was produced at the same period or before, however it was the most succesfull and a definate eye opener for many people.

... Tangerine Dream... hell, I even think Richie Hawtin has an arm in there somewhere! CJ Bolland, eh? Goa is a good place to start, but if it weren't for those crazy dudes in detroit and chicago the acid house movement would never have lifted off in Belgium, UK, etc... and therefore no techno sausages would have drifted into India.

Robert Miles
I dont think that he ever made any trance music. But our trance music or i should call it psytrance, i guess is something between the artists that made the early techno and acid house music and the Indian and all that "crazy" music . Maybe there is somebody in the forum from the 80s that can tell us
