hey,
i think you need to improve your mixing skills.
i listened on dynaudio bm6a monitors in a acoustically treated and what i heard is; very narrow stereo image , alot of masking and tonality problems.

check this, maybe you can find something that will help you improve your skills.

hey mate had a listen to the first track, i think the reason it sounds so 'mono' is cos you got all the driving elements of the track right down the middle, ie kick, bass, percussion, leads, whooshes etc. a good trick to widen any track is to pan the percussion, hats etc either hard left or hard right, or have them going back and forth between the two to get that "around your head" type feel. in a lot of pro mixes everything is panned hard left or right except kick, bass, snare and lead vocals/melody, so try that out.. just keep the very main melody line in the middle and pan everythin else, all the other synths, hard left or right
the balance of your mix is also not great. a good trick for getting the balance between parts right is to monitor at a very low level, like barely audible. it's a lot easier to tell if anything sticks out or is too loud when everything is really low cos it's like the only thing you'll be able to hear. ie the bass is too loud in your mix, which is a mistake that a lot of people make when they're first starting out. the fav aspect for a lot of people in this music is bss, so there's a tendancy to try and have huge bass in the mix. but in reality the pro tracks with 'huge' bass don't have a very large amount of bass in them at all, they're just very really mixed and they *control* the bass very well so it sounds tight and big.

PsyGalaXy,
Ozone stereo widening can easily be overdone, if you feel the need to adjust extreme settings to get a little wider stereo image then something is wrong with your mix, or your monitoring environment. (incorrect speaker placement is the most common problem of bad stereo image).
panning is an art, you cant pan stuff hard left, and other stuff hard right and expect to have a wide and balanced stereo image.
what all stereo widening effects do is create a very fast delay between the right and the left ch , that creates phasing and if overdone the stereo image will sound like a ghost and when played in mono will drop in volume and some freq will be phased out.
a few tricks that can make a mix wider are for example: if you have some lead....you double it and pan 1 hard left and the other hard right and then do a different eq on each ch, but the eq has to be very suddle.
one more trick is doing a manual delay of 1-10ms on one ch, left or right.
one more thing, if your mixing and your hearing that the stereo image of your mix is wide but as soon as you play it on other systems it sounds very narrow, then you should try different speaker placement.
about the masking, if you cant solve it with eq and panning then that means you have to solve it in the time domain (delays, chorus, reverb, phasers etc....) or find a different instrument that works for you. |
