I'm always impressed by your kicks, it's got this nice dry punch to it and doesn't sound too edgy or hollow.

Cheerio chaps.
Goes to show that one should process analog basslines with digital saturation plugs from time to time. I was pleasantly surprised my self to be honest. It worked with that patch, but it does not always work...for the record the bassline is a square VCO with some saw VCO an 8ve higher mixed in, both phase re-triggered (its called Note Sync on the Minitaur).
All my kicks are made in Ultrabeat, it is still my favorite drum synth. Learning Massive for kick design, but I still haven't got the results I have had from Ultrabeat.
As for the music, lots of Moog Minitaur and Phatty leads and FX, through moogerfoogers, and as always some Nord Lead and Virus C patches as well as the odd glitched out x0xb0x acid line.

After reading this thread i decided to give Saturn a go, and I'm quite pleased. It gives a nice little bit more 'something' to the bass, nothing major but it seems to cut thru the mix much better. I'm sold.
(of course ill find other uses for it besides bass)

you slam it on your bass synth with the default setting and the bassline has that rubber vibe to it instantly, subtle yet easy to hear. its a bit like quadrafuzz without fuckin all over all the freq range in a weird way..
and then try using the "magic mastering" preset on subgroups like kick/bass or the master bus just to see how clean and cool this thing can make your sound in other applications..

Bro! I had to laugh when i saw you say that bcos I stared using it like 2 days ago and they were my exact thoughts ! haha
U described my experiences with quadrafuzz exactly.
ThrillseekerLA , ThrillseekerXTC (free) from http://varietyofsound.wordpress.com/downloads/ are pretty good too. I dont mind Noveltech Character either but find it better for perc.
Was wondering what you guys prefer in the way of compressors. Standard Cubase or something else? |

yeah, qf has a degrading sound to it, still nice for some stuff, use it mainly on kicks or if you want that gritty zenon bass sound.
and yes, noveltech character is one of my favourite plugins too
first i found it weird. but as soon as i started to get into it grew on me and i find it versatile and unique! its very very good for a large variety of uses..

Me too hey, I use it more on perc and some synths, not really bass yet. But have found you have to have it set to -4 or 5 bcos it makes shit peak. That fun little red light that makes all the other red lights come on haha |

you can get some nice drifty/spacey pseudo-filter sweeping effects by setting up two more aggressive sounding bands and then attaching an LFO to the crossover point.
I imagine if you take your time and set it up nicely with very minor settings you could make a bass sequence really breath and swell
