It's grown. Growth equals commercialism which then again has the effect that more and more non-psychedelic psytrance is produced. The mystery disappears. No, growth is a bad thing imo. But one can’t stop evolution. It will grow big, and we can’t stop it. We have to deal with the fact. ...I don’t have to like it though. As long as there exist good psy out there, I'm good. Hell, just look at Hip-Hop. How much crappy CRAPPY hip-pop hasn’t been released in the last .. 20 years? But no matter how big this "rap" genre grows, there will always be people producing "real" hip-hop with the heart in the right place. Same with Psytrance, same with Metal, same with country and yes, same with POP-music.. NO MATHER HOW MUCH CRAP IS BEING RELEASED, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE GOOD MUSIC.. (ups, caps lock) Dig and you will find. hmm, am I going off-topic now =) Anyway, I think this question has been raised a million times before. So... Topic locked? |

Evolution? Where do you see evolution? I see degradation only. All i see is pop stars on one side and untalented producers that substitute content with power and killer kicks/basslines on the other side. If you want to hear evolution you should look the other way.

just wondering... since you have this view... and are part of the isra team / senior member obviously actively involved in trance...
what mood does this put you in? you are heavily involved in a scene you say is Devolving.
I am not disagreeing or agreeing with you... just wondering what the psychological effects of your situation is... (maybe also because at times i find my self in a similar situation as you) I'm an optimist... and i hang on to the good quality music, people, and scenes that happen even though their might be a lot of junk out there.
what keeps you going?

guys, guys... it's not because full-on is turning to crap that all psytrance is... We still have dark psy, which is going the same way full-on did i have to admit, but it's not that bad yet... And don't forget the suomi soundi our finnish brothers are producing!! there's still no sign of degradation in that part of psytrance (on the contrary, it keeps getting better). Also there are some people who started making the old skool sounds again (check suntrip records) for the people who miss the old goatrance sound...
So if u forget about full-on there is still a lot of good stuff being released... i have to admit that the last full-on album i bought was the one from misted muppet, but that's so original i don't even think i can call it full-on... |

Evolution in psychedelic/goa trance and its subgenres is hard to spot.
Most of the musical change comes through crossing genres, some even go as far as crossing into pop & rock music.
In some cases, these cross genre creations are popular, but often only to a narrow crowd.
Perhaps the exception is the vocal/pop full on like Dali, Infected Mushroom, Skazi and so forth.
Actually, thats real innovation for you - but - sadly innovation most die hard psytrance freaks disapprove of.
I think, when taking it all in, the evolution has moved towards diversity, but within clear definitions - This is very much excemplified by the many subgenres.
Most noteworthy are.
Progressive
Full On
Dark Psy
Suomi
Tech
&
PsyChill
Which all come in different flavours.
Its not much different from when you list rock genres.
Metal
Grunge
Rock N Roll
etc
The times of ground breaking evolutions are long over, like all other music trance and psychedelic trance has become boxed in, limited by human imagination and what sells.
After all - If you release something, you need to be able to sell it... or someone needs to want to buy it, at the VERY least listen to it.
If you want to find evolution in psychedelic trance, most often you will have to look to the underground - only very few artists get tracks with a totally new or experimental sound released.
Nothing released is underground in my opinion... As soon as it enters the distribution networks, it becomes commercial (since someone needs to buy it and sell it, it is a product, thus, its commercial).
After all, labels need to sell the music or often profile their label djs or whomever. To do that, they need "killer tracks", which is basicly another word for "hits" and nothing else.
So - Very little evolution - but if you like psychedelic trance, well - then you like it. Regardless of the amount of evolution over the last decade.
A last note:
Just because evolution in music is hard to spot, it doesnt mean that the scene itself stands still.
In regards to parties, people, culture and so forth I think there is more improvements.
So, as a whole, its evolving... Everything doesnt depend on the music, even though it is at the centre of everything, the parties and people are what matter the most.
