Lets say I have a very fat lead that I made, now would it be better to use the hi pass filter on the synth and make the lead less fat, or would it be better to leave it fat as is and use hi pass eq? Anyway I hi pass most of my sounds at around 150 to 200.Any one know which way is better to go about this or do you think its the same? I know it's all about what you want to achieve with the sound, but I am interested to hear how you guys would process your sound to fit with kick and bass using only the synth and eq.

well you are talking about the same thing, the only difference between the two is the slope and depth of cut in the tool used.

Go for what sound best, sometimes filters have too sharp slopes and too much cut, and vice versa. Sometimes you want more loend, sometimes not.           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

You could route your synth to two efxchannels: one for lower sounds, one for higher sounds. Then you can sidechain the lower efxchannel partially to your kick (or any other sound with which it collides).           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

a very good idea ! i'm too lazy to do this kind of things so i use eq to cut between 200-350 sometimes more.you can do the same with filter and play with the resonance if you prefer but i like the eq more.

hey avduka, here's a very simple solution also (without canceling all other answers)

hi-pass @ 200
.(not ok?)
then @ 300
a.(still not ok ?) continue.. @ 400 etc.
b.(ok @ 300 but u lost some 'meat'?) double hi-pass @ previous value... 200

works.

HP at a relatively low frequency (eg. just below the lowest fundamental frequency of the lead) to get rid of the rumble, then low shelf to lose some weight and get it to fit with the bass. Also consider some LP to lose the fizziness at the top, this can help it fit better with the high percussion and click of the kick.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
