We're organizers in Chicago and trying to decide how to handle drumming at our next party Metatronic 2.

Do other North American organizers allow drumming at parties? Do you stop people from drumming who are way off beat? How do you handle this?

Let's just say we got some complaints about drummers at the last event. I believe acoustic accompaniments to DJ sets CAN WORK but frequently did not because of lack of talent in certain audience members.

Has it been it that much of an issue out there? Here in San Francisco we have a pretty massive hippie population (duh) that tote drums to parties, but it's never been that much of an egregious problem to me. Then again, a lot of those dudes had decent chops on the bongos.

Drums and percussions at the parties are very nice; just make sure they end up in the right hands.

Well, when i was in Toronto for the Wizzy Noise party last year, the next day there was some sort of chilled casual thing on the beach.
had some Indian dude with a Dholak but the Dj found it hard to coordinate with the drummer.
So it soudned a lil silly after a while           ~*** You can tell By the way i use my walk, Im a woman's man, No time to Talk***~

I have been at a number of pagan events where bad drummers absolutely killed drumming circles. There were bad drummers at our last psy party.

There are some really awful drummers and some brilliant ones. I'm just wondering what you do about the awful ones.

there are 2 sides of a coin to this.

as a party-goer, i like it and think it add to the over all warmth and feeling of an event

as a dj, i hate it. When people drum they tend to set up by the dj booth to do it, thus making a little confusing when trying to listen out to your monitors.
my sugestion is to allow it, but limit where in the venue it can be done. Keep it to the back of the room, as far from ear shot from the dj as possible

I've been only once to a party with a drummer right next to a DJ. I did not like it - drums did not let me enjoy the music fully. I also asked my friends whether they liked it and many said they didn't. But no one dared to go and ask to stop it... May be it's different with other drummers, but this was my experience.

how can you not allow drumming at a psy trance party? if they get in the dj's way or whatever just ask them to move, but dont disallow them from drumming alltogether, unless its me, I suck at drumming, especially when i'm not sober, dont let me get anywhere near them

I am all down with hand drummers as long as they aren't right up next to the dj area. I have had issues where I have lost track of beatmatching because of some drummers throwing off my rhythm. I don't think it would be correct for partyorganizers to prohibit drummers from doin their thing, but if there is a way for all parties to do what they need to do without it becoming a distraction then, it's cool.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

first I'm a drummer. Also a dj.The drummers if close by,goes fast on my nerves...I never in my life ask then to stop.I had hrs of torment specilly in hawaii. They take the drumming very serius.
A couple years ago I play a chill roon on a small party in Cancun ,Mexico>there were there 2 drummers, and tey were yong and handsome, and they were incredible players, they had the shit together.good fun.
after my set I meat the dudes.they were the ritym section for the Gipsy Kings just enjoying a couple days off on the beach.
shit happens. That is my good one w the drumming situation...they were good....

This sounds like the best way to go. Thanks much for the feedback.

yes I agree, he should be relegated to the back of the room, away from the dj and the speakers. When we dance we don't swing our fists around hitting anything in our way. same thing. when they drum I don't want my ears assaulted with some other dude's trip.

Any LA people remember the trumpet guy at the Koxbox party several years ago? kept appearing out of nowhere in different areas of the room, playing some notes then dissapearing
