I'm not really a person who preaches or tells people what to do or don't... but some things i've been reading lately really upset/worried me...

Clearchannel Entertainment is taking over one club and festival after another in Belgium: Fuse, Cultureclub, Pukkepop festival, Werchter festival, all these are (where) very respectable (non-psytrance) events bringings artists from all over the world...

What is so bad about this? Clearchannel makes their artist sign exclusive contracts, so all artists that play at these happenings can only be booked via the clearchannel organisation, for a much higher price than before. Also, this way they make it impossible for alternative, smaller organisations ( i'm still talking about festivals with well over 20.000 visitors) to book artists at affordable prices, and keep the exclusive artists all to themselves. They make it impossible to get your artists, hence you loose your crowd. they determine every part of the festival, standardising everything into their precooked recipy... add water and you're done.

They own over 1200 radiostations in the US, and have a large part in sponsoring the bush administration during the his elections.

Since they obtained "I love techno" in belgium, the dj's and artists playing for them have become their artists... making it much harder and more expensive for other techno organisers to book them and create an affordable event with these artists... still the artists sign these contracts.

How does this all affect us? Judging by the rumours i'm hearing now there's a large chance that any time soon they're going to discover and possible try to influence psytrance festivals/events... The day this happens is a day i will cry some tears for sure (I do believe that organisers of the current top events have little or no interest in cooperating in this way, but i can imagine that as soon as they start waving dollar bills some organisers could just go for this... or they'll just start up something themselves).

This way they will make it very hard for stand-alone organisers with the best intentions to do what they are doing today... (the future might not look to bright after all)

share your thoughts on this, i'm more than curious! and excuse me for my far from perfect english

Of course it's a frightening scenario, but I doubt it will happen. Atleast not as much as you fear.

The psytrance scene just isn't big and commercial enough, and I guess the artists they represent sell millions of albums worldwide, while in this scene it's more like thousands.

Interesting topic though.          DJ pr0fane (Iboga Records) | Multiphase

I think that could change very very fast with their promotor skills and media influences... And i think the comparisation between the techno scene in belgium and psytrance scene isn't that far off...           www.psytracks.com :: Brand new website for sharing your psytracks with the world. But they will never sign Grapes of Wrath, for example, or Trashlords, or Texas Faggot..

They took Howard Stern off the air in 6 states this week... anywhere clearchannel was responsible for the broadcasting.

reason for doing so- he is "pollitically incorrect and sexually vulgar".

Scary indeed. Though I too doubt it will happen.

And if it will, the psytrance scene is very well-connected worldwise and there will ALWAYS be good artists somewhere that will provide an alternative to mainstream.

it isn't very profitable because it isn't our intention, and we simply didn't study marketing for 7 years... they did.           www.psytracks.com :: Brand new website for sharing your psytracks with the world. Get a free 250Mb Artist profile, Blog and events calender!

That's capitalism.
Making a product and selling it.

Clear channel never "made" much, they simply had the money to buy whatever was popular! How many of those 1200 statios do you think they founded themselves?

They bought there way into the belgian top mainstream festivals and some clubs, forcing others to give up completely.

Another seriously negative sideffect of globalisation...
