Ok I don't want to be prying into people's private finances but after plowing through what I owe to my government in taxes I was curious if people who WORK in the trance scene in some way pay taxes.

Don't worry I'm not the IRS or Tresor Public or anything of the sort but I was curious if artists making music and flying to festivals look at pure profit or are they shackled by the same chains of despair that are taxes.

How about party promoters? I for instance want to throw a party? If I make money (which is a rare thing these days) do I need to declare it? Label owners do you press and sell cds and pocket the earnings? Are distributions free and clear as well?

If no one wishes to share their stance regarding the subject, I will assume that nobody pays taxes of any sort by working in the trance scene and I will consider a career change as a result

totally depends on the country you're from... and the tax structure, government/ legislatrure.
here in India.. a party is more or less illegal, and I dont think party promoters declare their income either way, ofcoarse I might be wrong, but then again not too many people pay taxes here anyway.. everyone is just looking to evade it!
Nothing is said that has not been said before.

switzerland is a wealthy country, but only because its citizens pay taxes for silly little things. it's a bureaucratic state, nothing is for free (almost nothing) and most issues need to be declared.

from what i know:
-as an artist you should declare your estimated income and pay taxes for it, even if you travel abroad and get paid for a gig.

-as a party promoter of a large party you need to at least declare the licenced musical trackselection played by djs and liveacts during the event. i think this is good, because it supports the labels and their artists.

one rule for swiss: if you don't pay, you can run, but you can't hide, eventually they will get you

here in canada, you only have to declaire taxes if you make more than 10,000$ CAN dollars.. so i doubt any label or artist makes that much from music..           "VA - REWIRED" OUT NOW !! (techtrance invasion) ---> http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/86303/forum/9

I've never earned enough money to pay taxes (or at least that's what they think).

Lol@ Nygma....you can't hide! It's true - I just heard from a friend of a swiss guy who got the swiss cops knocking on his door in spain for "forgetting" to pay!

Someone should put out a track called Black Money...it's a goal of mine to earn as much of it as I can!           «They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.»

Thank you for all the frank responses...

@ Forest Dreams: Yes I realise that india and other southeast pacific countries are the exception. No one really pays income taxes unless they live in luxury.

@ Nygma: I see that our swiss neighbors like their taxes as much as the French, except we are poor!!

Ok well now I that I've been properly sodomized by my government, I think a change of carreer is in order, I'm going to tour festivals and light myself on fire for a living Any takers?

In France, if the promoters are non-profit organisations ( association 1905), they don't pay tax under a certain amount of profit. Not sure how much.
But they still supposed to pay the licensed-music tax to the SACEM organisation, the social tax on all salaries (security, etc... but also DJs fees - add about 70% to what the guy really get) and the VTA on any thing they buy to work with. (compagnies would have a refund on what they use but pay the VTA on what they sell).
An of course, the promoter people can't put the profit in their own pockets.

But don't forget that in France we have one of the best social system in the world.
It costs a loooooot... and nobody knows how long it will last.....

at least in greece if you dont have a stady job you can hide some profits and dont pay taxes
but as soon as you start to buy expensive things you must declare your income or will get penaltys and pay to the irs the fines and they are big
also if sign a contract with a label and get paid for an album you must pay some tax!not much but a small amount!

good thing is tha you can buy second hand thinkz!

We also pay 22% of our wage to the insurance which is controlled by the state,we pay an additional 19% of the net price of any goods we purchase(value-added tax) and finally at march we pay also our taxes to the state(but only if you have revenues of minimum 10000 Euros) .
as u c we all work the government.
the funny thing is that the citisen who has revenues of 10000-20000 he pays 20% of them for taxes but a millionaire pays only from 8-10% of his revenues(depends from whats his/her relation with the government )
and iMo It's disguisting.
Its true that the average pension of a greek hard working citisen hardy exceeds 350-400 euros per month(which are acclaimed to taxation ) while the medical treatment for an elder couple costs around 500 euros.
And imagine that some ppl have 5 private planes!
Hope things will change in the future!or else I'll go to the jungle with my solar energized mp3 to hang around with the gorillas!

mmm I would recken that there are quite a few psytrancers who earn over 10000 € a year. I mean let's be realistic, I'm talking about the artists who've "made" it and and play abroad let's say once a month (most often it's more). Ok now let's say that they ask between 1000$ - 2500$. Well that puts them easily in the range of 12000-30000$.

Now obviously most artists aren't playing abroad so much and the income definetly isn't regular but hey, if they can get away with it, I envy them

Now just out of curiosity, can trance/techno artists be treated as "intermittents du spectacle"? Anybody french folks have any thoughts on that matter? I need to set up my safety net if I'm to make a career change

Everybody pays more or less taxes i guess.

In Greece if you declare an income of less than 10.000 euros then you dont have to pay nothing so the majority of the country doesnt pay taxes in the end of the year.

Ofcourse we got 19% VAT for everything we buy but this takes place in most of the countries of the world i guess.

Ok back to the trance business.

For those that operate a label its impossible to not declare taxes because you cant work in the market without invoices, also they know how many cds you print directly from the factory since the factory itself provides this info to the government and to companies like Acum and Sagem that are responsible for the artists royalties. So the artists are obliged to give invoices for the tracks they sell to labels, the labels are obliged to give invoices to the shops they sell their cds and the shops are obliged to give an invoice to the customer,as simple as that.

About artists things are more complicated since its not easy to check on them when performing on various countries but ofcourse like a french artist recently said to me 'Its better to declare some money yourself than let them check on you'.

And by the way there are A LOT of psy trance people who earn much more than 10000 euro a year.

P.S FaithNoMore you said that people that make a lot of money in Greece pay just 8%-10% taxes,i dont know who told you that but i can say to you that its not true.           Toodaloo Motherfuckers!!!!!
