its completely ok to say you dont like an artists music or that you think they suck. that is not the issue here-
if a label thinks a track is good enough to release, then that label thinks that track is worth money- it is selling the music and making money. that label needs to honor its commitment to pay the artist who made that track.
at the same time- the artist only gets as good of a deal as he/she makes.
beware.

a label does not need to sell pop music to have a good reputation. there are some good labels of many kinds of underground music that pay the artists, either up-front, or as promised in the deal.
@ all the small labels- i would say that today its extremely easy to collect some tracks- any tracks- and press a cd and release them.
if none of your own money is risked on artist advances, just why should the artist risk his/her tracks? and what incentive do you really have to even try hard to sell them?
this trance scene has too many labels- and too many low-quality releases. time will tell what stands...

i think making music and handling the business of bookings, and releases is a full time job or rather several full time jobs if you take them seriously enough. it is certainly possible to start your own label but this is not a topic about starting your own label.
this is a topic about a certain label GeoMagnetic that has managed to gain a worldwide reputation of not paying artists, despite attempts at damage control this is the issue...
i have heard about it long before this topic came to this forum...
generally most of the Geomagnetic releases have been low-quality in my opinion.
i think this is a story of making lots of releases from tracks of unknown artists and thinking they dont need to get paid...
i think you would be dumb to buy their releases and and artist would be dumb to release on their label.
but they are not the only one...

I've wanted to stay out of this, and I have, but I feel now that I should drop a line or two.
back in 99-2000, when I was a fresh faced kid in san francisco with a couple of 1200's and a lot of enthusiasm spook and rich and ross were the first people I met. I learned a lot and grew a lot from their energy, dedication, and vision.
I'm saying this because the human context needs to be re-inserted. this is a man who has spread a lot of love and turned a lot of people on around here. Is he perfect? Far from it. I'm not defending or condoning any actions, I stayed clear of the label and mostly write tunes with Ross. Anything house or mastering related was not my business as well. Just speaking as a friend and collaborator usually on the periphery, occasionally central here and there, of the s.f. psytrance crew...I hope this works out somehow and that something is learned from the experience on all sides.

Well some of the releases are not so good indeed, but there are also some very good one's specialy in the morning section like:
the new "Imix" Cd and of course "ATMA" wich in my oppinion is probably the best morning release i heard in long time. (i don't talk about the dark releses because i don't listen this kind of stuff)
Anyway, this artist are not new commers, they have been in the scene for long time now, and their music can be easly released on any other more fameouse label.
So i don't think they signed GeoTv because they are dumb. For sure Spook promised them much better deals than other labels. The problem is, Spook is not keeping his word...
He lies the artists and than he STEAL their work.

even if he like the music and we dont agrea on the terms (IMO no contract) meens there can be no deal... there can be no relise.

Well, yes. Money.you know, the small pieces of paper you're used to buy food with? Can't live without it as you well know unless you want to find yourself on a street bench somewhere.
Most likely 80% of the artists if not more wouldn't think on making music as a way of living if it wasn't making for them a satisfiable income. And that's not only in Trance,but in all genres of music. Do you prefer amateur musicians rising as the next "stars"(again,I don't mean only in Trance)?
Music is important in this world. Where would we be without it??
Besides, it's not the issue here. Nathan Vogel aka Dr Spook didn't keep his promises, and much worse, he kept doing it in an undignified repetitive way to an artist and then to another artist and another 1 and another 1. VA's, Albums. He didn't care......

should we assume by your posts that you also think its ok not to pay the artists?
as a sometime dj and trance lover i wonder why exactly i spend my money just so some label guy or distributor (like ZMA dude) can keep it in his pocket.
man- the money is mostly for the artist! who made the music. the label and distro are just the business that sells it- they have a right to tax it sure- but lets not forget that without the music there is no product.

but this topic is about a pattern of doing business that got so bad it went public...
im not even involved in the biz or production side of things and i even heard about it! from more than one person...
then i see Geomagnetic ads everywhere and cd's for sale and i wonder "whats up?" you know?
i just think people should know and beware and not mess around with people who work like this...
the tao te ching says to avoid "vexatious people" as they will bring trouble to your life...
