to pack a club? some of my friends say that only a good name will bring the crowd
i think that if the price is rite that will be the start of a good domestic show.

I don't know about the New York scene specifically, but in general, it should be possible to fill a venue with locals only if everything else falls into place right.           Load Universe into Cannon. Aim at Brain. Fire.

I think this is a very good idea.
Actually, sometimes local small parties are much better than huge overcrowded ones (like those in Spirit), and they are cheaper.
so good luck with this!

sometimes?           We are all visitors to this time, this place. We are just passing through. Our purpose here is to observe, to learn, to grow, to love... and then we return home.

I am not in NYC now, but was around a year ago, and yes I do think it is ready for a domestic lineup

on Jan 9th 2004 we did a party.... with mostly domestic dj's... yes we did have Penta play, but Penta lives in the States, and all the rest of the Djs were living in the NY area at the time

the party was a good one, and that was a year ago.

so.... i think its a good idea. go for it.           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

I think it is very possible to get a full club of people with only local dj's. If it's very well organized: the right place, deco, chill out room.....people will show up.
I live in NY now, but I've lived in CA (SF Bay Area) for a while and a lot of parties involved only local dj's...most of these parties were great and some even better than with int'l, famous dj's.
It's all about the music, so if the music is great and the mood is right each and every event could be your best ever.
I definetely think that NY is ready for something like this. I've been going to NY parties for about a year now and I see a lot of familiar faces every time...can't see why not these people would not show up to a well-organized event with good music.
All we need is a start and it will only get better.

peace

Well, compared with Spirit, small parties are almost ALWAYS better (don't like extreme yes-no answers), but there are also big events, like festivals, which I find very good, too.
anyways, right now in NYC, if I had to choose between a big-name party or a local dj, I would probably prefer the last one.

Short answer, no.

history:

If you can't pack them in when there's international talent what makes you think it can happen with locals? Perhaps the cover goes from $35 to $15 but it seems that NYC always has parties with locals. You have to understand that there are market segments for psytrance in NYC. There are groups of promoters, that target travelling ex-pat Israelis, Tsunami at the forefront. The Omnitribe has a different constituency. Then there yet other groups, like the Himayalan Voices party last year, there was some quality talent, much of it local, Maybe a 100 people showed, perhaps 40 actually paid the donation at the door. Then the other parties like the 55 Lex parties, bridge parties, pine barrens parties. When you're talking about a club like Spirit, you've got a different, and much larger, segment of club-goers showing up- perhaps not so familar with the music.

Shit, even the outdoor festivals don't draw real numbers, we're talking something like 500-700 at Omnidance and Gaian Mind, perhaps 400 actually pay the ticket price. These guys are working on the fiscal edge.

Synthetic Sadhus, at their prime, were drawing probably over a 1000 people, by the end it slacked to half those numbers.

Perhaps someone could comment on the Tsunami Vinyl parties? The last Tsunami Vinyl parties were losing money for sure (I have a close source to this). You can only lose money for so long.

Your best chance is in marketing coverage, handing flyers out at ALL the trance parties to get that coverage. Post on the obvious places like the yahoo lists, here, etc, but handing flyers out will be very effective.

I would be interested in party census numbers for other parts of the country.

I think that it would be a good idea to focus not just locally but nationally. There are quite a few US artists that would be more than willing to play (most likely for really cheap) anywhere in the states.
Living close to San Francisco, there are several parties that consist of local talent. Sometimes, they are better than the ones where some large international artist is flown in.

At the same time, if you have too many shows where the same local djs play, it may affect attendance for those shows... My suggestion would be to have one international artist either once a month or once every two months, and have one show that is a mix between local talent (maybe some that don't play out very often) and national talent that fits with the theme of the event.

This will keep people from being partied out from too many events happening in a month and due to the local shows having a bit less overhead, you can use more intimate places with a bit smaller of a capacity.

We had a lot of parties here in Los Angeles, for example, with just local talents...around 700ppl, great music and great vibes....Sometimes, they are better than some of the International artists that people spend loads of money to bring them in.

Focusing nationally and in Canada is probably the best choice, thats one of the things that really helps the scene to get stronger and the artists better ....without having the issue of always having the same djs, bringing then freshness to the movement without the need of expensive productions in big venues.
Like that I think its possible to have smaller events with quality, where locals and other artists can show their talents where there is more interactivity between all.
Ricardo....700 is what we get in nyc for a party with international names....most times at least...local parties here can have 150, 200...
