Hello

I recently had the pleasure of seeing DJ So at Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia and he was ridiculously good... very nice progressive, dreamy and magical

Can anyone give me an idea of the sort of stuff he plays? I know he plays for Plusquam so that is my first port of call, but can anyone recommend any of the dreamy tracks he plays?

Thanks, and anyone who hasn't seen this guy and gets the chance to, do it! If you're into progressive, he won't disappoint

Dwight.

hi dwight,

Dj So is the resident dj for The Labyrinth party/Mindgames organization in Japan (www.mindgames.jp), my party crew. The set he played at Rainbow was incredible, in my opinion the best set of the entire festival. He stuck to "one sound" that created a very personal and special moment on the floor--it takes a lot of courage to play an entire set of that dreamy-magical meltdown sound. But the people loved him for it. We walked around the festival afterwards and many people came up to him and thanked him for that set.

He is also the plusquam dj in Japan, but the stuff he played at rainbow is very different from the plusquam sound. right now he plays a very lush, gentle, and melodic form of underground progressive house.

His latest mix cd tracklistiing is:
Invisible Inc-Stars
Alexander Chruch-Cycles of Life
Weekend World-Joshua Cantrell rmx
Odd-don't look at me/late night dub mix
Quivver-these are the days
mathew dekay-god's answer
fretwell-faceless
yunus vs subsky-erotic sumo
derek howell-i was just leaving
andre absolut-step through
graham+blade-funky summa

He played some of these tracks at the party.

This latest mix cd is unbelievably good. As you saw, his mixing ability is just silly. I think he's by far the best dj in Japan right now. If you come to this year's labyrinth, you can see him play a 3-hour meltdown set!

Hi Danza,
Sorry, the mix cd is promo only, not for sale. If I can get it posted online, I'll make a note here in the forum.

Hey guys what's all this about? What about us Europeans? Will we get a chance to catch him playing anywhere in the continent, anytime soon? I think he played at Butan club recently but i couldn't make it. I hope that European promoters (especially the Germans and/or the Swiss) will fly him over here at some point during the summer season.

Ok guys, Dj So is really talented. And I had the chance to check his set last week. But another DJ who really blast the floor (and his set was similar to So's, but more energetic) was Makoto. In my opinion, his set was better than So's, but both were very very good.

i'll tell him to sign up so he can make an appearance!atlanticark, So played with Infusion, Absolut, and Kasey Taylor at D-Nox's party at the Butan this summer, and he played the following week with Shiva Chandra. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes another mini-tour of Europe next summer.

Hi russ!

Thanks so much for the information there... I'm writing music and DJing at the moment and aiming at a sound similar to this - very afternoony and dreamy

DJ So played an absolutely incredible set... how different are his plusquam sets when he plays in Japan?

If there are any mixes or lists or whatnot that he releases or puts online, I would definitely love to hear about it.

Can you point me to any places online where I can shop for music such as this? And the genre is progressive house?

Thanks!

Dwight.

hi dwight,

any major online provider of progressive house will have loads of this style--just shop around and listen to samples. even trance shops like psyshop now carry this style, but you're better off going through a bigger online store. So's sets in Japan are similiar to what he played at rainbow.

(plusquam is a german label that's associated with, but to be honest there's little connection between that label's sound and what So plays. however, keep your eyes peeled for future cd releases from plusquam, you might find a surprise...)

Also I just found out from SO that he is working on his own website now to showcase his design portfolio and all of his mix cd's, so within a few months there should be many mixes for you to check out!

For inspiration in this style of music, my recommendations are anything by:

Andre Absolut
Dousk
Chris Micali
John Graham aka Quivver/Space Maneouvers
Mathew Dekay

These guys are the masters of this sound. So's probably hasn't played a set in the past 2 years without at least 1 track from Quivver, Mathew Dekay, and Andre Absolut in it!

For labels, there are really too many to mention, but Sog, BozBoz, Release, Focus, Vapour, Sprout/Plastic Park, and Bedrock are a good place to start looking. Have fun!

hi hikari,
i also love pig&dan! unbelievable production. i tried to get So to play some Pig & Dan tracks, but too deep and dark for him, he he he ;-)

Luke Chable has another monster track on kasey taylor's label Vapour later this year, and don't miss Steve Porter's debut album this month.

p.s. Hikari, if you don't come to Labyrinth this year, I will assume that either:
1) you don't like progressive, or
2) you don't really exist!!!
