Just cuz you write them down to be more prepared, doesn't mean you are selling anyone short.

Another example is of the 80's or the late 70's when the computers, and hand computers just kicked in.. In mathematics classes, there were those that wouldnt touch that 'thing' and do all in their head ( I was one of these )... Until I understood that alongside with the damage it makes, it speeds my decision making and helps me in more than one field to get better as a whole.

I dont understand why someone becomes (better) dj by knowing this.. The dj is not to calculate, the dj is for playing and amusing the ppl... |

well, to answer your question, using Yuli's example.. if, back in math class, you compared the kid who never used the calculator, to the kid who always relied on the calculator; wouldn't it be fair to say that the one who never used the calculator is somewhat "Smarter" than the one who relys on that machine??
Even though the test scores reflect 100% for both kids, the kid who used his brain obviously understand the subject in a more indepthed manner...
(now, getting back to CD's)
what if you were to forget your CD case at home before a gig, and had to mix with someone else's cd?? what if that person doesn't have BMP slips in his case?? how will the crowd react to this cacophonia??
i've always cheated my way out of math class, on my tests, copied from a friend, had my answers written in my calculator on a piece of paper.. but then again, i hated math class and felt forced to learn something that didn't interest me at all... it was torture to me!! I hope to a dj mixing without slips isn't torture to you....

i got a good ear 4 it..!!
n can safely tell out bpm.. always 143 - 149...
slight deviations dun count
on a serious note,
i think DJs should be able 2 guess bpmssss by listenin 2 it..

of COURSE you should be able to mix without bpm's, they are just handy, not neccessary.

no need to guess BPM.
and it doesn't really matter @ what BPM you are playing your set. I never know what BPM I'm playing at i feel if the speed is right or wrong for the crowd.
yuli, it rarely takes more then 30-40 seconds to perfectly match 2 tracks together so the time factor is insubstantial.
CD VS Vinyl. I'm not even going to get into it.

mixing with cds and got the right hearing for matching, one can even do it in 10 seconds. all about practice

Lets say that it is questionable.
@ clown
My man I have no problem what so ever to mix without bpms, I just really really dislike that.. I totally prefer to have my case fixed with bpm's and scales and heeps of other things - to know my music very very well
@ Borris
That is why sometimes ( rarely i agree ) one can ask himself "WTF is Borris doing now?" - He will ask because either u were making something completely amazing or on the other hand something completely horrible. When I go to an adventure in my set ( and I do it most of the times ) I am partially prepared and know what I am looking for.

AND... if you're playing a track at a speed that is differs more than about 3-5 bpms of its original speed it will sound bad, because the frequency balance will be off. You might guess the speed of the track correctly, but often tracks subjectively sound faster or slower than their objective speed because of faster percussion, distortion, sweeps and so on. So yeah, i think that knowing the objective speed of a track can at least help the sound quality of your set. But let's quit this discussion, the proof of the dj is in the playing, not in his opinions (or...)
