Hi all!
I need a midi controller for Traktor, to practise and to have fun with, Also i bringing it to a camp im working on this summer and i thought id show the kids and let some who want dj at the disco we gonna have, so we will also rent a small PA.
So i got a laptop and i got a NI Audio Kontrol 1 soundcard, but now i see that some of these dj midi controllers has a audio interface, dunno the quality of those, maybe it would be handy for a kiddy disco but for a real party i would like to use as good connections as possible...
Could someone tell me which of these is the best buy, im on a budget around 220euro
VESTAX Typhoon
Numark Stealth Control
Numark Total Control
Other options if you have for this price, also i need with volume faders and EQ, classic style, for basic mixing...

Wow for that price with so many knobs, buttons and faders..
is it easy to assign the knobs, faders and buttons to traktors parameters?
I will probably mainly use, Play, cue, sync, some looping also and
Channel volume, Pitch and the EQs
though im thinking for the kids it would be more cool with a controller that looks like a real mixer, but i would get this one for my self, looks very handy
Thank you Basilisk for the great advice..
still im puzzled... would be nice to have a unit with all the labels in a educational purpose and to easy navigate... Still i could use tape to put tags on the faders, knobs and buttons...hmm

My advice save up for the VCI-100 ... rather buy quality and use it over the years than worry about upgrades etc. Ive read good things about the VCI-100

I went even lower budget for my first MIDI controller, with an M-Audio X-Session Pro. You can get them for less than $100US as part of the "Torq Mixlab" package. For the price I'm quite impressed, as everything else at that price point looked like crap, although admittedly it doesn't have a whole lot of buttons. It does what I want it to - an entry into the world of digital djing.
Now that I've learned a bit, I can see that the lack of jog wheels and cue functions on the mixer is a bit of a downer. I'll probably supplement this with another controller at some point. The real limiting factor is the included Torq LE software however, which I've found to be a bit buggy and feature lacking. Should be upgraded to full version of of Torq or Traktor asap. Again I stress the extremely low price of the base unit. If you're already going to spend several hundred bucks, I see no reason not to save up a few hundred more and get something pro quality, like the vci-100.
Those Korg Nanos look nice as a supplemental controller, either that or the NI Kontrol X1. I expect price point will win out again over professionalism, for me at least right now. |

For the longest time I was in search of a controller with a solid jog wheel comparable to those of the robust Pioneer CDJ-1000... then I realized it isn't really necessary. Since I am travelling a lot I decided to examine it from the other side--not "what is the most killer controller I can get" but "what is the most portable controller offering the best bang for the buck." For $70 you can't really go wrong with this gadget--which is, I might add, completely customizable in Traktor. (Four "scenes" effectively quadruple the number of modes you can configure; one for straight mixing, another for effects when mixing externally, another for loops if you wish, etc.) It's a steeper learning curve than having something with pre-allocated (and labeled) buttons but hey, it's all a matter of what it is you are looking for... and there is a lot of choice in the market today.

I read Hercules MK2, MP3, RMX aren't that bad for practicing/beginner DJing. |

i'm in love with my vestax typhoon
for the price, you can't beat it. it's a solid piece of gear, and i can take it everywhere. the faders are very nice, and the crossfader has that effortless vestax feel that lends itself to cutting and even (gasp) scratching. i also love that you can dial-in the sensitivity of the dual-mode jog platters. i would suggest to anyone that it is definitely worth upgrading from traktor le to traktor pro as soon as possible.
at some point though, i can see myself trading-up for a vestax vci-300. although the quality of the typhoon is great for the price, it still doesn't compare to the rugged construction, 24bit d/a converter, and high-resolution platter sensitivity/adjustable torque of the vci-300.. plus, the vci-300 mk2 allows you to upgrade the crossfader to their new magnetic sensor system (scratch djs take note ).
i would really like to take the time to play around with serato itch too.. it looks like some really amazing software.
