Hi,
I am looking for a good DJ controller upto $500.

Please suggest a good one.
I have zeroed in on the hercules MK4 so far.
It should have easy mapping with traktor or virtual DJ preferrably.

Thanks in advance.

No... no more scientists, no more laboratories, no more experiments, I thought you`d be able to understand that. No more!

The Vestax Vci-100SE looks very good, and I'm trying to get one secondhand.
Although you need to get yourself an external audio interface as this controller doesn't have one built in.

I say buy a Numark Total control/Audio2dj and and external mixer that way you'll be set even if you have to play in a gig where the mixer is already setup.           "Whoever said the best things in life are free... obviously grew their own bud"

Don't get a Herc Mk4. They don't seem to be too enthusiastic about the Mk4 on djforums.com:

from the looks of it I would say the RMX is a notch or two above... but we won't know for sure till the specs are released.

this is just a new version of their most basic controller - the dj control MkII or whatever it was called. From what I see, this is a toy.

I own a Hercules RMX and judging by the looks it seems that the RMX is still superior. It is just a upgraded model of the MK3 obviously.

My opinion:

I use a Hercules RMX controller myself, with Traktor 3.1.4 (I think). The internal sound card is a BIG plus for me, it's compact and looks and feels great - especially the rotary knobs feel very solid.

I love the configurable LEDs, you can even make them flash in the BPMs of the tracks that are playing. Not all of the normal buttons have LEDs though, most importantly the 'Kill High/Mid/Low' EQ buttons. An inexplicable design oversight. Setting it up took me a while once I got to configuring the knobs, sliders and buttons, but that's because I completely overlooked the 'page 2' tab in the Traktor midi controls. I was looking everywhere for it, while it was under my nose all the time. Chalk it up to my lack of experience.

All in all, I am really really happy with it. I got to give a friend's Herc RMX a 'test spin', so to say, and it was so enjoyable that afterwards I just couldn't go back to using a keyboard and a mouse. I got one as soon as I could.

All in all, I think the Hercules RMX is an incredibly solid mixer and a great deal. If you're gonna buy a Herc controller, buy that one. I haven't used any other controller for an extended period of time, so I can't comment on whether those are better than the Herc or not.

Hope this helps.

the vestax typhoon has a lot of functionality and offers a built-in audio interface, and is specifically designed to integrate with traktor (although i've heard that some units are now shipping with virtual dj now as well). it's a pretty well-designed entry-level unit and the platers/faders are very nice for the price, however it's lightweight plastic construction prevents it from being a good choice for a lot of travel and gigging... but for $300, you do get a lot of bang for the buck. i've had a lot of fun with mine, but eventually you're most likely going to want to trade-up to something a bit more substantial like the vci-100 mk2.

I spent $70 on a Korg Nanokontrol and it works well enough.

I am using the Hercules MK4 and I am extremely satisfied with it. I also owned the Hercules RMX and the Numark Omni Control, which now I just use as a simple soundcard for my music production pc.

The RMX was great. The Omni not so great, had often problems with VDJ and I couldn't really count on it.

I was always looking for the most portable and light set-up.

The MK4 is working flawlessly with VDJ and when combined with my 10' tablet pc, the whole package hardly exceeds 2 kg and has the smallest possible footprint.

Stanton is just about to realese an all in one controller (doesnt need laptop) with a big LCD screen and its own OS.

check it out:

I bought a second Nanokontrol after realizing how happy I was with the first one. I also tried a lot of other (much more expensive) controllers and nothing seemed nearly as powerful. I highly recommend skipping all the hyped up "DJ controllers" in favour of the humble Nanokontrol.

Hi Basilisk!

Are you using NanoKontrol with Ableton Live?           StarLab - Label DJ/Artist for Digital Om Productions

Nope, I use it with Traktor!

Have you seen the Faderfox controllers? There is a new one for Live:
